Samsung Galaxy S8 Active vs Galaxy S7 Active: Which Rugged Device Is Better?

Aug 19, 2017 01:16 AM EDT

Samsung has officially launched the rugged smartphone Galaxy S8 Active. The smartphone has been listed as an AT&T exclusive for now and is available for pre-order. The newly launched Galaxy S8 Active is a big step-up from the Galaxy S7 Active though.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Rugged is built to military grade durability standards so it's shatter, shock, water and dustproof. It also has the same internals as the Galaxy S8 with one or two major changes that are immediately noticeable.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Rugged is available in Meteor Grey and Titanium Gold color variants. The smartphone has a metal frame and bumper to protect against shock, tilting or twisting. The back cover also has a rugged, tough texture for a secure grip. This device has passed military specification (MIL-STD-810G) testing against a subset of 21 specific environmental conditions, NDTV reported.

However, the Galaxy S7 Active was at the bleeding edge of mobile hardware last year. Specs-wise, Galaxy S8 Active has a Snapdragon 835 processor. This year's active model features the same 4GB of RAM as last year's model, though the amount of onboard storage has seen a sizable bump to 64GB, up from 32GB in the last year's S7 Active. Both Samsung Galaxy S8 Active and Galaxy S7 Active feature MicroSD slots for expansion up to an additional 256GB, Phone Arena reported.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active boasts up to 4000mAh. This year's Active flagship run on Android 7.0 Nougat, comes with a single Nano-SIM support and features a 5.8-inch QHD+(1440x2560 pixels) Super AMOLED display. On the camera side, it has a 12-megapixel rear and on the front, it has an 8-megapixel sensor.

To tip the scales even further in the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active's favor, the new model features Bluetooth 5.0. However, the Galaxy S7 Active made do with only version 4.2, which has half the data transfer speed and cannot pair to more than one device at a time.

In terms of power and performance, there's really no contest. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active would still be plenty fast for just about anyone, but the Galaxy S8 Active is simply a generation ahead.
