HTC Volantis gets certified in South Korea – Launching soon as Nexus tablet?

The rumored Volantis tablet from HTC is apparently getting closer to launch, as the slate just received certification in South Korea.

For quite some time, HTC has been rumored to be working on a tablet called Volantis or Flounder. The slate is expected to launch as a Nexus tablet in collaboration with Google, but nothing is confirmed so far in this regards. The purported HTC Volantis has not leaked too often in recent weeks, but it has now surfaced again in some exciting news.

More specifically, the purported HTC Volantis has apparently received certification in South Korea from the Radio Research Agency (RRA), which is the country's equivalent of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Certification from such bodies usually means that the device in question is ready to make an imminent debut.

As you can see in the image above, this yet-to-be-announced device has indeed been filed by the HTC Corporation, but that's still no confirmation that it's the much-rumored tablet. What gives more hints, however, is the model number. As GforGames points out, @evleaks posted an image back in June showing what looked like the back panel of a device with the words "Flounder" and model number 0P8210000 inscribed on it. Evleaks had titled the leak "HTC Volantis." The HTC device featured in this new RRA listing has the very same model number, suggesting that it's the same device as the one leaked by @evleaks.

The RRA documentation doesn't reveal any additional details regarding this unannounced HTC device, but it's presence at the agency suggests that it may be ready for prime time soon enough. It remains to be seen whether it will indeed launch as the next Nexus tablet in collaboration with Google, as nothing is confirmed at this point. So far, the HTC Volantis was rumored to launch as the Nexus 8, then as the Nexus 9, but it may also debut as a tablet from HTC alone, without any ties to Google and the Nexus lineup.

It's anyone's guess for now just when this tablet will officially make its debut and which markets it will hit, but more information will likely surface closer to launch. HTC has revealed no plans to launch a Nexus tablet so far, but we'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more.
