iOS 8.1 jailbreak already surfaces, but with a few caveats – Here’s the deal

Apple just released its latest iOS 8.1 and a jailbreak is already available, but there are still some caveats for now.

Many iOS users generally love Apple's operating system and its multitude of apps, how it moves and reacts promptly, and how it handles even the most demanding tasks. On the other hand, there are also many iOS users who don't like the "walled garden" Apple has created for its mobile operating system, and prefer to jailbreak their devices to escape it.

Up until now, there's been quite some time since the jailbreak arena saw any action. Apple has repeatedly plugged jailbreaks and made it increasingly difficult for developers to break into the software, but that doesn't mean that it's impossible.

A new iOS 8 - 8.1 jailbreak now comes from the Pangu team, the same one that took the world by surprise when it released the iOS 7.1.x jailbreak. Up until then, Pangu was virtually anonymous, but iOS users eager to jailbreak their devices have since come to trust the team.

It's worth pointing out, however, that Pangu is still working on this iOS 8.1 jailbreak, which means that there are still a couple of things to smooth out. The jailbreak is now available for developers, but it has a few caveats.

First of all, the new iOS 8.1 jailbreak from Pangu is aimed more at developers rather than the general public. Secondly, Cydia is not yet working on this jailbreak, but should be soon. According to a thread on popular site Reddit, Cydia creator Saurik is currently working on making it compatible with this jailbreak.

"So, windknown has contacted me, about a half hour ago, via e-mail. He has told me one of the issues that is keeping Substrate from working on the device, which will probably require me to build a little binary patch for dyld as part of the Substrate installation sequence," Saurik wrote. "This was the worst possible day for me, as I'm travelling back to Santa Barbara today (I'm currently in Texas, having come here to give a talk at The Big Android BBQ), which means this will take me a little longer than I'd like, but clearly getting Cydia and Substrate working on iOS 8 is my highest priority. I thankfully think that I actually can start working a little on one of the substrate issues using an iOS 7 'model' based on the information provided by windknown, which means I'll lose less time to not having all of my devices with me. (I currently have no clue why Cydia itself is not functioning, but will find out later today when I can see it myself.)

Lastly, another caveat with this iOS 8.1 jailbreak is that the tool only works for Windows right now, and no English version is currently available. This means that Mac OS X users still have a bit of a wait ahead of them, while Windows users can only get the Chinese-language iOS 8.1 jailbreak tool at this point. Nevertheless, the jailbreak is available here, and some tweets from Pangu may help you through the process.
