Samsung Galaxy J1 officially launches with entry-level specs, low price tag

The slim and sleek Samsung Galaxy J1 has officially launched in India via Amazon, retailing for Rs. 7,190, i.e. roughly $115.

The Samsung Galaxy J1 has been the star of numerous leaks and rumors in the last few weeks, and now we finally have a concrete launch date and price tag. The smartphone enters the entry-level category of the market, which means that it comes with modest specs on board to accommodate a low price point.

More specifically, the new Samsung Galaxy J1 sports a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and packs a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex A7 processor under the hood, paired with Mali-400 graphics and 512MB of RAM. Other specifications include 4GB of internal storage capacity, microSD card support for additional memory, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front shooter, and a 1,580 mAh battery. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, FM Radio, and HSPA+. The handset also supports dual-SIM, and comes with Android 4.4.4 KitKat on board out of the box.

In other words, the Samsung Galaxy J1 will surely not be good enough to satisfy those looking for a high-end smartphone, but it does come with decent specifications for its category. As previously mentioned, the handset caters to the entry-level segment of the smartphone market, and is one of the cheapest Samsung products yet. On the other hand, rival smartphone makers gunning for the same category have similarly priced devices, but with better specs, so it remains to be seen whether Samsung's new offering will see much success.

Nevertheless, the new Samsung Galaxy J1 has now officially gone on sale on Amazon India on Wednesday, Feb. 11, sporting a price tag of Rs. 7,190, which would translate to roughly $115. The retailer lists the smartphone as in stock and ready to ship. Available color options include white, black, and blue. For more information about the handset or to place an order with Amazon, head over to the product page on the retailer's website at this link.

It remains unclear at this point when or if the Samsung Galaxy J1 will become available in other markets as well, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we learn more.
