Cyrano: Now You Can Send Scented 'Messages' with the oNotes App

Massachusetts-based company Vapor Communications has introduced Cyrano, a fresh new way of sending messages with the first-ever scent based mobile messaging system for the iPhone.

Cyrano is a cylindrical device that holds scent cartridges. If a friend also has a Cyrano, you can send "scent-infused" messages to each other.

Users would have to download the free mobile-messaging app oNotes in the Apple Store. They can then take a picture and tag a combination of scents before sending it to a friend.

The Cyrano scent speaker, as it is called, is used with a pack of 12 scent cartridges, sold separately. The scents include guava, honeysuckle, lavender, lilac, citrus, ginger, vanilla, pine, peppermint, coconut, suntan lotion, and Venetian Bellini, which can all be combined to create a harmony of scents.

Cyrano can also be used to set specific scents with music. Users can create a playlist and assign a particular scent, for example, combining citrus with a feel-good playlist for relaxation, or combining a beach party playlist with the smell of suntan lotion.

If you're not into messaging, or you just want to simply have a relaxing mood without music, Cyrano can also be used in place of a scented candle or even an air freshener.

"Scents connect us more fully to our emotions and memories than any other sensation because only the nerve for scent goes straight to our brains." oNotes' David Edward explains. Fancy a trip to the beach but can't go out? Just fire up your Cyrano and enjoy the wonderful smell of the beach and coconuts in the comfort of your own home.

Cyrano has great potential to grow particularly in the virtual reality side. Tech Insider pointed out the possibility of the Cyrano being incorporated in virtual reality headsets like Oculus Rift, enhancing the VR experience.

Users can get the oNotes app for free on the Apple Store. The Cyrano device is priced at $150 while the 12-pack scent cartridges will be another $20. It can be pretty expensive if people would just use it in place of a scented candle, but there is huge potential in this product and is highly recommended for techies and individuals who just want to smell the flowers, if only through an iPhone app.
