Olympus Ventures Into Action Camera Market, Unveils Stylus Tough TG-Tracker

Notwithstanding the apparently super-saturation of the action/adventure camera market, Olympus recently announced its new Stylus Tough TG-Tracker, the company's first-ever hardy camera to sport a complete Field Sensor System.

While Olympus is not reputed for making dedicated video cameras, with the launch of the Stylus Tough TG-Tracker, the company expects to this impression. The Stylus Tough TG-Tracker is a compact video camera that comes with a tough build and 4K recording ability that directly targets at the GoPro market.

Incorporation of an advanced range of sensors, the TG-Tracker possesses the ability to log everything from latitude and longitude to altitude and shooting direction. It can also log air/water temperature together with its videos and stills. The new features of the camera will especially be enticing for photographers who delight in capturing their adventures in the wild as well as reliving them at home, Digital Trends reported.

Together with the Olympus Image Track App, TG-Tracker users can show their sensor data alongside the stills and videos they captured when they were on adventure. Announcing the new camera, the company has claimed that this will augment the thrill of relieving outdoor action "with an immersive, data-rich viewing experience."

The Stylus Tough TG-Tracker is a small camera, which is waterproof up to 100 feet, remains unharmed from 7-feet drop and possesses the ability to function in temperatures as low as 14°F. In addition, the new camera can withstand 220 pounds of pressure and without requiring an external case, PC Mag reported.

In terms of other features, the lens of Stylus Tough TG-Tracker covers a mega-wide 204-degree angle of view, with a maximum f/2 aperture. Moreover, the lens is stabilized by means of digital techniques. The 4K capabilities of Stylus Tough TG-Tracker allow the camera to capture 2160p (UHD) footage at 30fps. Users can also enhance the frame rate to 60fps by lowering the resolution to 1080p. On the other hand, fans of slow-motion pictures can shoot at up to 240fps in 720p or 480p.

The battery unit of the Stylus Tough TG-Tracker is same as that of the TG-4. This makes the camera an excellent companion device for video. It can record up to 95 minutes of 4K footage on a single charge.

Olympus has announced that it will start shipping the TG-Tracker in June. The camera carries a price tag of $349.99 in the United States and $479.99 in Canada.
