'Mega Man' Animated Series Confirmed for 2017: Robotic Dog Rush & Mega Mini Expected to Appear

Capcom has announced that a "Mega Man" animated series is in the works, and will start airing next year. Kellen Haney, who works at Capcom, confirmed on his Capcom-Unity blog that a brand new Mega Man series is in production.

The series will be developed by Dentsu Entertainment and DHX Media. It will be produced by Man of Action, the executive producers behind "Ben 10," "Generator Rex" and "Big Hero 6."

The new animated series will follow the exploits of Aki Light, a normal schoolboy robot who lives in Silicon City. Aki's unique programming functions have given him the ability to transform into Mega Man, complete with a Mega Buster, a nanocore armor and the signature blue helmet. Aki will then need to juggle his superhero life with his normal school-kid robot life.

The blog promises "exciting new technologies and new robots" to be featured in the animated series. Haney has also confirmed that Mega Man's trusted sidekick, robotic dog Rush, will make an appearance.

Meanwhile, IGN reports that the series will also introduce new characters, like Mega Mini.  A screenshot Mega Mini posted on the website as well.

In a press release posted on Dentsu's website, President and Chief Executive Officer, Yuichi Kinoshita, said that he is excited to work on this project with DHX Media. "Mega Man has a rare, nearly three-decade-long tradition with fans," Kinoshita said. "We are excited to work with DHX to bring this newly imagined version of a long-beloved character back to the global marketplace."

DHX Media's Chief Content Officer, Asaph Fipke, is equally enthusiastic. "We see this as an excellent opportunity to build on the rich legacy of the Mega Man video game series and introduce the famous boy robot to a whole new generation of kids worldwide," Fipke said.

The series aims to cater both the younger audience and the older fans who grew up with Mega Man. The new series will be shown in 2017, as part of Mega Man's 30th anniversary offering.
