'Fable' Card Game Won't Die: Former Lionhead Developer Starts Kickstarter Campaign to Bring F2P Mobile Title to Life

Lionhead Studios may have been shut down by Microsoft in March, but the Fable series lives on. A Kickstarter campaign will be started for mobile card game, "Fable Fortune".

The now defunct gaming studio had been secretly developing a free-to-play Fable card game for 18 months before it was closed, IGN reveals. However, former Lionhead Studios employees Craig Oman, Mike West and Marcus Lynn have decided to continue the project, thus forming Flaming Fowl Studios.

Microsoft has given Flaming Fowl Studios permission to use the Fable license, which means that the team can now continue developing the game on its own, Game Reactor reports. However, without the software giant backing them up, the indie game studio has resorted to Kickstarter to get funding for their mobile game project.

"Fable Fortune" is an online trading card game comparable to "Hearthstone." Mike West, one of the founders of Flaming Fowl Studios, said that the team's aim is to bring improvements to the current card game genre. The indie developer is looking at adding a full online co-op mode against AI "bosses", a leveling system for cards depending on the card's usage as well as Trophy Cards.

Fable fans around the world will be delighted to know that the game developer will be getting a lot of references from their favorite franchise. Fable characters, locations and even the British humor that the game is known for will definitely be making a comeback, along with some character concepts that never made it in the final version of the previous games.

The "Good or Evil" format, which is a staple in Fable games, will also be applied to the card game, enabling the players to transform their hero and their powers, allowing some cards to morph into new forms.

We're looking to build this game with the fans and then potentially morph and change things about the game over time," West declared . "This is our starting position - we need to find out what people want from a CCG, and we're ready to talk to them."

Talking directly fans, West added, "If you want a Fable game, at the moment, this is your Fable game." The Kickstarter campaign will go live on Tuesday, May 31 at 3AM BST / 10AM ET / 7AM PT. In the meantime, Fable fans can follow Flaming Fowl Studios on Twitter for more updates.
