Nintendo's 'Splatoon' Wins Big At Tokyo Game Show, Snatching 'Game Of The Year' Award Despite Being New

Nintendo's colorful and messy third-person shooter "Splatoon" is a huge game in Japan.

The game has stayed in Japan's top 20 sales chart even after more than a year has passed since its launch.

"Splatoon" is a Wii U third-person shooter which makes players use characters called "Inklings."

As "Inklings" players can morph into cute squid forms that can hide or swim through colored ink which players spray around using toy guns or giant brushes.

The game can be played 4-on-4 online multiplayer or through a single player campaign. The 4-on-4 multiplayer modes include Turf War, Splat Zones, Tower Control, and Rainmaker.

"Splatoon" As Nintendo's Smash Hit

According to reports, "Splatoon" has sold 1.5 million units in the country and 5 million units globally, making it one of the top-selling Wii U games in recent years.

Nearly half of Wii U owners in the world have played countless hours shooting down each other with every color imaginable.

"Splatoon's" success proved that Nintendo could make a great online shooter consistent  with their philosophy and values.

It is no wonder that "Splatoon" garnered several awards, including Best Shooter and Multiplayer Game at the Video Game Awards of 2015.

This year "Splatoon" can add one more feather to its cap

Splatoon As "Game Of The Year"

The well-received game "Splatoon" has recently won "Game of the Year" award from the Tokyo Game Show 2016.

Before the Game Show ended, the show organizers surprised fans when it handed the "Award of Excellence" to Splatoon.

The "Award of Excellence" is the Tokyo Game Show's equivalent to the "Game of the Year Award."

The children-oriented game beat out heavy hitters like "Metal Gear Solid 5," "Fallout 4," and "The Witcher 3."

Incredible Staying Power

"Splatoon's" accolade comes as a great surprise for video game analysts because the game debuted only last year and several other games have come and gone in the PS4 and Xbox One which could have made players forget about the game.

The newest award just shows the incredible staying power and high replay value of "Splatoon."

It is so well loved that gaming communities have organized their own "Splatoon" tournaments.

A prominent example is the tournament organized by ESL this year which will award the winning team in 2017 with the highly anticipated Nintendo NX.
