Chrome OS Stable Channel Gets Google Play Store, Improved Features Via New Update

Chromebook owners are now eligible to get Google Play Store in Stable channel as new update for Chrome OS has started rolling out to these devices. The update comes along with improved features, security updates and bug fixes.

Chrome OS in Stable channel can now get Android apps as the latest update to version 53.0.2785.129 gives them full access to Google Play Store. The support to Android apps in this version has been sought after by Chromebook users since its release almost five months ago.

In fact, Chromebook owners used Reddit back in April to call the attention of Google to allow them access to Google Play as the store was still inactive by then although the feature was already there. Last May, Google revealed that Google Play would be coming soon on supported devices. By June, it was made available to Chrome OS version 53 via Dev channel and via Stable beta update in August.

As of now, Google Play Store is already available to Asus Chromebook Flip and Acer Chromebook R11 with the latest Chrome OS version 53 update in Stable channel. Google Pixel (2015) has not been included in the official announcement, and there is no official statement until now as to when it would get the store in Stable channel.

Meanwhile, other Chromebook users not mentioned still have to wait when to receive the update that would allow them access to Google Play Store in stable build. According to Android Authority, they might get it even before Google's media event come Oct. 4.

For Asus Chromebook Flip and Acer Chromebook R11 owners who have not received such update yet, head over to Settings > About Chrome OS and check for updates. Chromebook owners still have to enable Google Play Store in Chrome Settings after getting the update.

Google Play Store in Chrome OS Stable channel for Asus Chromebook Flip and Acer Chromebook R11, however, is still in beta version.
