Motorola Unveils Unlockable Bootloader With Photon Q 4G LTE

Back in January 2011, Motorola, in response to an open outrage over its policy of selling Androids with locked bootloaders, released a statement promising that it would work towards finding an unlock solution that all parties involved could live with. A few months later, it again updated the users on its progress, expecting that it would be able to start offering bootloader unlocks on some models by late 2011.

However, Motorola has announced the arrival of its Photon Q 4G LTE for Sprint, and has also revealed that this Android will be the first model supported by its unlock program. The unlocked bootloader will finally go live next month.

“We’re excited to announce that Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE, just announced today and coming soon to Sprint’s fast 4G LTE network, will have an unlockable bootloader,” the official Motorola page stated. “We’ll share more details on how to take advantage of this feature closer to availability. And moving forward, we’ll be looking to offer this option on other devices as well.”

And although this is great news, as far as Motorola fans are concerned, it is no way greater than the actual arrival of the Photon Q 4G LTE itself. The 4.3-inch device has been expected since spring and will run on Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

Furthermore, the device will also sport an 8-megapixel rear-end camera with 1080p video capture, and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel cam, a QWERTY slider, 1.5GHz Dual-Core processor, 1GB of RAM, and extendable memory up to 32 GB MicroSD. The handset will arrive sometime in August, but the exact date and pricing info is forthcoming.

Motorola has also confirmed that, in addition to the Photon Q, other Androids will be able to take advantage of unlockable bootloaders.
