OnePlus 3 Production Halted To Make Way For Snapdragon 821 Refresh?

The Chinese company has reportedly stopped production of the OnePlus 3 for the anticipated arrival of a refreshed version. The updated model is said to come with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 and a different screen.

Why Stop OnePlus 3 Production?

OnePlus is no stranger when it comes to being unable to meet market demand. They have previously temporarily halted sales due to the shortage of OnePlus 3 units, 9to5Google reported. Now, the company is having a hard time again in supplying all their customers. As it turns out, the AMOLED display used in the handset is experiencing some troubles itself, so the smartphone maker is stopping production to balance things out a little, per Gizmochina's sources.

This is also the reason why the upcoming OnePlus 3 refresh will sport an LCD screen, which is a notable downgrade. To make up for it though, they might be giving the internals an upgrade. The current Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 will be swapped out to accommodate the faster and better Snapdragon 821.

OnePlus 3 Could Compete With Google Pixel

The latest chip by Qualcomm is only being utilized by two brands to date, one of which is the recently launched Google Pixel siblings. With this, rumors are floating around that OnePlus 3 may be looking to compete with the search engine giant's phablet.

Both the OnePlus 3 and Google Pixel XL use an Adreno GPU, but the former is at advantage when it comes to memory. The Chinese phone has 6GB RAM, while the other only has 4GB RAM. The Google-branded device also has less megapixels in its rear camera, but it has been given a rating of 89 by DxOMark, which makes it the best smartphone camera to date.

Aside from the mentioned changes, the OnePlus 3 refresh may not sport any more changes. If rumors are true, consumers can expect a OnePlus 3S, as it is called, being announced soon.
