'Game Of Thrones' Director Lands Sony’s ‘Mulan’ Live-Action Adaptation: Will Alex Graves Do A Better Version Of The Film Than Disney Could?

When news of a live-action adaptation of Disney's "Mulan" came out, there were numerous issues involving the project. At the moment, both Sony and Disney are planning to do a live-action for the film and the two film giants are racing with each other to identify the people to man their respective teams so that production can kick off. Sony won the first round of the race after tapping "Game of Thrones" director Alex Graves for "Mulan." Meanwhile, Disney is still searching for someone capable of taking over the project.

"Mulan" Live-Action Adaptation

"Mulan" is one of the most popular Disney movies and it features the story of Hua Mulan, a legendary Chinese warrior who purportedly disguised as a man so that she can take her father's place in the Imperial Army. Sony and Disney are currently planning to do a live-action adaptation of "Mulan." The two giants in the film industry have been trying to assemble the team that will be behind "Mulan" but from the looks of it, Sony was able to find a director first, as per reports.

It was rumored that Sony was looking for an Asian director but the plan may have been abandoned. Sony's version of "Mulan" would be under Sony Pictures International and it would be a Chinese co-production. The lead will also be Chinese. Graves would join Jason Keller, the scriptwriter behind "Mirror, Mirror" for this project.

Disney's "Mulan" Film Based On 1998 Movie

On the other hand, Disney is also busy at work to complete the cast and crew for the project. Disney has been eyeing Ang Lee but the director declined because of another project. There's no news on who Disney plans to cast as the director although the plan would be to hire cast that is composed primarily of Asians.

There were prior rumors that the movie will feature a white male lead and "Mulan" would just be a supporting character. This plot has been attacked by fans and it is currently being rewritten. At the moment, Sony has not yet given any information on their release date, while Disney's live-action will be aired on Nov. 2, 2018.
