LastPass Offers Multi-Device Password Management For Free

Free users of popular password management service LastPass are getting an early Christmas present. LastPass founder and general manager Joe Siegrist announced that multi-device access is now part of its free package.

Prior to this announcement, LastPass Free limited users to one device, which includes PCs and mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. An even earlier iteration restricted the password manager's free service package to PCs and mobile users had to pay a premium. With the latest changes, LastPass Free now syncs passwords on multiple devices.

"Anything you save to LastPass on one device is instantly available to you on any other device you use," Siegrist wrote in a blogpost dated Wednesday, Nov. 2.

A Deeper Look Into LastPass Free

PCWorld reported that aside from unlimited device sync, other features included in the LastPass Free package are secure notes, security challenge and two-factor authentication (2FA). The password generator and the basic save and fill passwords feature also come standard with LastPass Free.

No further actions are required of current LastPass Free users for them to enjoy the new service on multiple devices aside from downloading the LastPass browser extension and mobile app. Siegrist said that everything in the user's vault will be available to him/her automatically regardless of which device he/she uses to login.

Note that after installing LastPass and logging into the mobile app, LastPass Free users may receive a notification that warns them of the LastPass Premium trial ending in 60 days. While the company is yet to address the issue, users can make sure that they won't get charged at the end of the trial period by checking the account's "automatic renewal" status and cancelling it granted that automatic renewal is enabled.

Doing so should convert the account to a Free one after the trial period ends. This is according to LastPass' FAQs page.

The Premium Advantage

For $1 per month, LastPass Premium subscribers will get everything that LastPass Free offers with a number of unique perks that includes ad-free usage, two-factor authentication options in YubiKey and Sesame, as well as features such desktop fingerprint identification and family sharing that caters up to five users. LastPass Premium also grants priority tech support and 1GB of encrypted file storage.
