Nine-Year-Old Girl Gives Birth In Mexico

ABC reported a remarkable news on Wednesday that a nine-year-old has given birth. Both the mother - referred to as "Dafne" - and her baby are healthy and are home now in Jalisco, Mexico. The father is said to be a 17-year-old who may face criminal charges for sex with a minor.

The child was born in Jalisco on Jan. 27, 2013. The whereabouts of the alleged father are unknown, though he is currently being tracked down by the authorities.

Dafne is unwilling to release information about the purported father, though she - and her mother - have described the relationship as "loving."

"Due to her young age, we don't know if she is being entirely truthful," said Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office.

Said boyfriend decided to leave town "two months ago" after Dafne refused to move in with him subsequent to his suggesting that the two could raise the baby together. Dafne was not aware she was pregnant until her seventh month.

Jalisco state authorities - in conjunction with the prosecutor's office - are seeking out the father in order to determine his take on the proceedings. They are also looking to work closely with neighboring communities in the search of the boy's location.

Dafne is one of 11 children and lives in poverty-stricken Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, 25 miles south of Guadalajara. The Zoquipan hospital in which Dafne gave birth said "around 25 percent" of 2012's pregnancies involved teenagers.

Because of Dafne's young age and the fact that her body was not yet ready to give birth naturally, a C-section was ordered by Zoquipan doctors.

Dr. Enrique Rabago, director of Zoquipan Hospital, said at a press conference held Wednesday that Dafne will receive both psychological and medical attention.

As of 2012, the youngest mother to give birth to a child was five years and seven months old Lina Vanessa Medina from Peru.  Medina's hormone glands had activated earlier than usual through a process called "precocious puberty."

The baby was named Gerardo and was born May 14, 1939. Medina, too, underwent a C-section in order to ensure her and Gerardo's safety.
