Pokémon Go Plus' Units Sold Out, But Why?

In the midst of shortages of the Pokémon GO Plus, Nintendo officially makes a statement regarding the wearable Pokémon GO accessory, directly indicating that the device has been sold out and are currently experiencing a shortage. Fans and players of the Pokémon games will no doubt know just how important rarity is to the franchise. After all, the main objective often revolves around getting hold of the rarest Pokémon available out there, and Pokémon GO is no exception. However, even the most veteran of players may have felt irritated at how hard it has been to get hold of the Pokémon GO Plus accessory, with some selling on eBay for outrageous prices.

Nintendo didn't see it coming

Because of the reaction to the stock shortages for the said Pokémon GO device, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima has issued a statement on the matter. Speaking out during Nintendo's recent earnings report, Kimishima stated that the company had not anticipated the rising of demand for the peripheral. "Demand far exceeded our expectations and production has not caught up, leading to product shortages. We apologize to the consumers and distributors affected by this."

Nintendo is making up

Along with the issued apology, Nintendo also revealed that it is now beginning to expand the production for the Plus. "To compensate for the shortage, we are planning to expand production as needed, and will continue to produce and ship out additional units," said Kimishima during the event. Still, no indication was given on when this can be expected to take place.

Frustrations over the device

The device, which turned heads of many gamers when it was first announced, eventually released to some comments of it being an entertaining, somewhat frustrating accessory to have. However, the rarity of this Pokémon GO device has been the cause of much frustration for the Pokémon gaming community. Frustration for the accessory's development also contributed, in which fans saw its release pushed back to September.

Nintendo apologized twice

With that being said, it's actually not the first time Nintendo has had to make an apology for a lack of stock. The popularity of the company's amiibo range has often led to sold outs and stock shortages of certain amiibo figures. Again, at that point, Nintendo also did promise to expand production, although the rarest characters do still sell for a premium price on online marketplaces.

Is it too late for Nintendo?

Though it's indeed positive that Nintendo is promising to expand production on the Pokémon GO Plus brought by the sold out shortage, it's still a shame that the company was unable to anticipate the huge demands for the product in the first place. The huge success of Pokémon GO may have been a bit of a surprise, but a lot of people still predicted that the accessibility of the game would lead to massive popularity. It may now be a bit late for Nintendo to make up with exactly what the fans demanded from the peripheral - particularly now that the peak of Pokemon GO has perhaps passed. Hopefully, all those who still want to get hold of the Plus will have an opportunity to do so.
