Australia's Weight Epidemic: More Than 10M Australians Are Obese

Australia is the fattest region in the nation, with three in every four adults carrying too much weight and putting themselves at risk of premature death. According to reports, male and living in a regional area are key factors that increase the likelihood of someone being obese. Latest official government snapshot shows country South Australia has the highest proportion of overweight and obese Australians.

More Than 10M Australians Are Obese

According to Herald Sun, latest official government snapshot shows country South Australia has the highest proportion of overweight and obese Australians at 73.3 per cent closely followed by western NSW (71 percent). This compares to healthy North Shore where just 53 percent of those living in Hornsby, Hunters Hill, Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Mosman, North Sydney, Northern Beaches, Ryde and Willoughby were overweight or obese.

Therefore, the nation’s slimmest region still had more than 50 percent of the population obese but the national average was 63.4 percent. In Adelaide, the obesity rate tipped the scales at 63 percent. Perth was the second slimmest area while Melbourne’s good restaurants could be why South Eastern Melbourne, the slimmest region in Victoria, was ranked the sixth place in Australia, just behind Brisbane North which ranked fifth.

The findings have prompted experts to renew calls for a sugar tax, tougher regulations on processed foods and more restrictions on advertising junk food to children, as reported by The Advertiser. Two Healthy Communities reports released by the institute today compare obesity and smoking rates across Australia. Even in the Northern Sydney area, which had the best results in the country, more than half the adult population was overweight or obese.

What Is Obesety?

As described by Medical News Today, obesity is a condition where a person has accumulated so much body fat that it might have a negative effect on their health. If a person's body weight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese. If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9 you are considered overweight. If your BMI is 30 or over you are considered obese.
