Effectiveness Of HPV Vaccine Now In Question

Human papillomavirus can lead to cervical, esophageal and other forms of cancer. In recent times, 69 cancer institutes from all over the United States have sent a letter to the CDC advocating the HPV vaccine to prevent the disease. Doctors are recommending that children aged 11 to 12 be administered two doses of HPV vaccine no less than six months apart.

For those who are aged 15 and above, a three-dose series of the vaccine is recommended. It is estimated that around 79 million individuals across the country is afflicted with HPV. The numbers of infected individuals are on the rise. According to the CDC, more than 39,000 different cancer cases related to HPV are diagnosed each year in the United States.

In contrast to these recommendations in the United States, HPV vaccination in Japan had lost its steam. According to Dr. Konno, the Japanese administration ended its recommendation for the vaccine in 2013. This stems from cases where young Japanese women had suspected adverse events after receiving the vaccine.

In 2014, Meredith Prohaska of Waukesha Wisc died after receiving HPV vaccine. Experts reported that the vaccine was not the cause of her death but the timing of her demise after receiving the shots had raised questions on whether it was the vaccine that actually caused the teen's death.

In central America a similar case happened to Karen Durán-Cantor. After receiving the vaccine, the teen girl had developed symptoms similar to rheumatoid arthritis. She later died. Some claim that Cantor's death is related to the vaccine she received as reported in an article by Liberty Voice.

However, HPV vaccine data are well grounded and well-studied. According to experts the risks are far outweighed by the benefits that can be gained from the vaccine. Reported side effects are minor and in most cases the vaccine is well tolerated. According to experts, human papillomavirus has been linked to certain cancers and this can be prevented. This is a home run for medicine according to medical authorities as reported by Science-Based Medicine.
