Director James Mangold Explained The Ending Of ‘Logan’ In ‘The Wolverine’

Hugh Jackman has hung up his claws as the Wolverine, with Logan bringing the movie trilogy to an end. Since the final scenes depict Wolverine's death and burial in the hands of his genetic daughter, it is concluded that director James Mangold ended the story without any stimulation of another sequel.

Ending Prediction

There was a premonition, courtesy of Yukio (Rila Fukushima) in the Wolverine. Yukio is gifted, not only with killer katana skills but also with the ability to see the moment of a person's death in the future.

In a scene with Yukio, Logan was in no mood to hear of "what is about to happen". However, a fan surprisingly noticed a metaphor that caught director Mangold's attention and replied, "Well done, Maurice". They are talking about Yukio's vision, which is the death of Logan.

The Metaphor That Concludes Logan's Death

To get more specific. Yukio described how she accurately saw Logan's death. When Wolverine's heart stops, not before his healing ability returned, she said, "Logan, I saw you die... It's not like I get a complete picture. More like looking through a keyhole. But I'm always right. All I can see is one part of a person's life: their death. And I saw yours. I see you on your back, there's blood everywhere. You're holding your own heart in your hand."

Now, since the heartbreaking metaphor took place, and unlikely to be noticed, Mangold hadn't planned the exact scene in which Logan takes his final breath. He also did not set things up on whom would be at his side.

Logan's Legacy

There is so much to praise in Logan's film. Hugh Jackman has remained consistent throughout his films. The soft-spoken actor may seem to continue his talent as a voice-over in the animated series, X-Men. Considering how many fans will be watching X-men film series again to connect all the dots.
