If you want to start a document migration for your organisation that is free of legacy data and will bring in a much cleaner atmosphere in your organisation, you must consider setting up the document migration. It is the cloud-based document sharing mechanism from which you can perform many tasks with full ensured security. It can hugely benefit your organisation. But many times a few wrong steps can make the whole plan of document migration go awry. This is the reason  You need to follow the steps to ensure a successful Documentum migration. These steps will make your tasks easy.

Have a well-thought-out plan before you start

A plan is a must for a successful migration. If you can not plan well, things can go terribly wrong. The first step should dictate how you will transition to document migration. You need to take account of all the files that you wish to transfer through document migration. For example: sometimes you need to adapt to the idea of what is the document that you need to transfer. As this process might be complex for some people. There have been cases where people were unaware as to what are the contents that they need to transfer, this led to lots of uncertainty. This is the reason they need to have proper planning well in advance to execute the task properly.

Implement your document migration plans

As you have planned well and you have a bit of idea as to what you have to do. Things will be much easier for you. You won't have to grope in the dark. As the plan is in place. You may need to decide about the actual migration and implementation. For the implementation, you need four extra steps to have the successful migration;

1.     Governance

2.     Test the migration process

3.     Actual migration

4.     Decommissioning

Let's cover each of the four points in the detail for better clarification

1. Governance: When you are transitioning from another shared site, it is important for you to bring up new parameters for the different environments that you are entering. It will ensure that you don't bring old methods that can probably spoil the work. The first that you need to do is to organize your documents and plan on the tags. Then you need to make the categories and see if there are any duplicate copies present in your system. If you have good governance around you, things will go smoothly. Governance is nothing but a set of rules to finish a work.

2. Test migration

This is another step in the migration where you run a test to see if things are going on well. This is the step that you need to conduct prior to the actual migration. While testing, whatever loopholes or issues exist, they will come up before your eyes and you can fix them. You are well aware that migration is not easy to do. The tools that you use have lots of restrictions. And there are caps on the length and character you use in the files. When you test, every issue will pop up before your eyes. You need to make sure that you run a proper test to see everything is migrated properly.

3. Actual migration

Now you have done the test. Now is the time to run the actual migration. As you have done the test. You can hope for things to go successful. In this step, you will decide how your migration will make the transition. This time, you can decide to move whatever you want to move by taking down the old system.

4. Decommissioning

Once you are done with document migration, it is time to bring down the old site. This will ensure that issues don't pop up for you. You can pull off this step in many steps such as picking out the server and performing all the decommissioning tasks.

Final words

If you follow these five steps mentioned above, there will be a surety that your document migration plans go as smoothly and as successfully as you expected. Just stick to the steps till your task are done.
