Cloudflare Outage is Causing Problems in Popular Services – Is a Fix Available?

Cloudflare, an American content delivery network, is experiencing an outage. This is according to a post on Twitter.

"The Cloudflare team is aware of the current service issues and is working to resolve as quickly as possible," Cloudflare tweeted.

The technology of Cloudflare "powers numerous other sites and services across the internet, and the outage appears to be affecting a range of different sites," according to The Verge.

According to Downdetector, among the popular services that the outage is affecting are Discord, Shopify, Grindr, Fitbit, and Peleton.

"Internet machine broke, our team is turning it on and off again so it should be up very soon!" Discord tweeted.

Other popular services that it hits are Omegle, DoorDash, Crunchyroll, NordVPN, and Feedly. Zerodha, Medium.com, news outlet Register, Groww, Buffer, iSpirt, Upstox and Social Blade also confirmed that they are impacted by the problem.

Cloudflare Identified the Issue and a Fix is Being Implemented

The problems appear to have started at around 2:30AM ET. Cloudflare reported that as of 3:20AM ET "a fix is being implemented."

"The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented," Cloudflare said in a tweet.

According to Cloudflare, it has rolled out a fix and is now monitoring the results. TechCrunch reported that there are several businesses that are confirming that they are beginning to come online.

According to The Verge, if you're a user of Cloudflare's own DNS lookup service, the issues are most problematic.

"Multiple Verge staff members found they were unable to access any websites at all during the outage as a result of using Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 DNS service," as reported by the news site.

To fix the problem, all you have to do is change your DNS configuration. A staff of The Verge simply switched back to using his ISP's default DNS settings. This resolved most of the issues.

Cloudflare's Previous Outage Also Caused Problem in Popular Services

The June 21 issue is not the first time Cloudflare has an outage. Similar issues were experienced by the content delivery network in July and August 2020.

In July 2020, the popular chat service Discord experienced a widespread server outage. The outage was due to Cloudflare issues. This has been acknowledged by the content delivery network.

"This afternoon we saw an outage across some parts of our network. It was not as a result of an attack. It appears a router on our global backbone announced bad routes and caused some portions of the network to not be available," a Cloudflare spokesperson explained in a statement to The Verge.

Similarly, in August 2020, another outage was observed. Numerous websites experienced a problem due to an IP outage by internet service provider CenturyLink, according to Cloudflare.

A Cloudflare representative said in an email to The Verge that: "Today we saw a widespread Internet outage online that impacted many multiple providers. This was not a Cloudflare-specific outage. Level 3/CenturyLink was responsible for an outage that affected many Internet services, including Cloudflare. Cloudflare's automated systems detected the problem and routed around them, but the extent of the problem required manual intervention as well."
