Optimus G successor to sport Snapdragon 800 chip: Will LG launch the new smartphone on August 7 event in NYC?

LG and Qualcomm announced on June 19 that the Optimus G successor will come equipped with a Snapdragon 800 processor. While speculations are buzzing about the smartphone's release later this year, there are reports of an LG event that will happen in New York City on August 7.

The collaboration between the two companies will give the new smartphone an 800 series processor that will integrate support for LTE Advanced and 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

"With a powerful combination of LG's core smartphone technologies and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, we are taking a significant step forward in the mobile experience. The result of this collaboration will in many ways be the industry's best smartphone by which all other devices will be measured," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company through a press statement.

The performance of the new Snapdragon 800 processor will be about 75 percent better than the Snapdragon S4 Pro chip and will include various technologies. It makes use of four cores of Krait 400 CPUs.

The new chip promises better communication and processing performance at faster speeds, improved battery life, better sounds and ultra high-definition graphics and more accurate location and navigation services.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor will battle it out with the Tegra 4 chip by Nvidia that comes with four cores and makes use of ARM Cortex-A15 architecture. Other competitions will be the Exynos 5 of Samsung, Atom chips of Intel and the A5 and A5X of Apple.

During a press event on June 18, Qualcomm showed off what the new Snapdragon 800 can do.

PCMag reported that the Snapdragon 800 seemed to be at par with the Nvidia Tegra 4 chip but edged the latter when it comes to encoding 4K video. The Snapdragon 800 also performed better while consuming less power compared to the Snapdragn 600.

Meanwhile, Engadget reported of an LG event that is scheduled to take place in New York City on August 7. Of course the details about the said event are scarce, but given the current teasers for the successor of the Optimus G, industry experts are speculating that this will be a smartphone event. LG is silent for now but more details are expected to surface as the date nears.
