Want a 3D camera? Turn your iPhone into one using a $50 Poppy

Remember the days when life was simple and 3D view means using a View-Master? Bring back those days but in a more high-tech way with Poppy, a $50 device that can turn any iPhone into a 3D camera.

While the Fischer-Price device could only wow users by displaying a series of 3D images, the Poppy can be used to display and capture 3D photos and 3D videos. The Poppy can be paired with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and the fifth-gen iPod Touch.

The Poppy does not depend on batteries and is pure optics according to the makers. It consists of a series of mirrors and lenses to do the 3D magic. Instead of putting a disc into a View-Master, users can snap their iPhone into the Poppy and the mirrors of the said device will create two images that will be combined into a 3D stream viewable any time.

The tool can also be used to view the 3D videos found on YouTube and likewise create 3D content to be uploaded to the video sharing website.

"Poppy is great for capturing events like weddings and for action sports, or for just playing with your kids in the backyard. Images and videos captured with Poppy are immersive. Viewing feels like you're experiencing the original moment again," the Kickstarter page of Poppy stated.

"There are other possibilities too, like real estate and architectural walk-throughs, science, education, augmented reality, art and more. We've tested Poppy in a lot of situations, but we're most excited about the uses you'll discover for Poppy," the crowd funding page entry said.

The creators of the 3D tool claims that viewing 3D images or tools are better with the Poppy than using the red-blue glasses like those used in cinemas. The YouTube 3D videos also make use of the same stereographic technology as the Poppy. So when played back, the Poppy gives users a high-definition and full color stream that anyone can appreciate.

The Poppy has so far raised over $55,000 as of Thursday on Kickstarter, surpassing its set goal of $40K ahead of the July 26 deadline.
