Google working on Android-based game console and smartwatch: Report

Google is reportedly working on an Android-based gaming console and a smartphone. It is also developing a new version of the Nexus Q, a media streaming device powered by Android that was unwrapped last year but not released to the market.

The Wall Street Journal first broke the news about the latest moves of Google to expand the reach of its Android platform, citing reliable sources.

According to the report, Google is working on the designs of the products and hope to launch one of them by fall this year.

The $99 Android-based Ouya officially went on sale Tuesday and is said to have sold out on GameStop and Amazon. The affordable game console that started out as a Kickstarter project rolled out with roughly 200 games selling for as low as $2 each.

Microsoft and Sony has been leading the game console industry with the new Xbox One and PS4 hitting stores before the holiday season this year. Nintendo tried to outmaneuver the two companies with the Wii U late last year but failed to catch up with the pack leaders.

An article on AppleInsider mentioned speculations about Apple's motives to enter the gaming industry with the possibility of the API of the Apple TV being opened so it can incorporate games. Apple is also collaborating with Moga and Logitech to develop a game controller that can be paired with the iPod touch and the iPhone.

Meanwhile, not much is known about the Apple smartwatch, dubbed iWatch, but there have been reports about patents for the wearable gadget in countries such as Russia earlier this month and in Jamaica back in December 2012. Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI securities predicted that the Apple iWatch may roll out before the end of 2014. The Apple iWatch will be able to link with a user's smartphone using Bluetooth.

Aside from the Google gaming console and smartwatch, the company is also working on Android 5.0 or Key Lime Pie. The newest operating system will most likely debut with the new Nexus Q. The Key Lime Pie will be able to run on the latest Android gadgets, including wearable technologies, in the market even if the devices have low-end technical specifications.
