Chrome OS Flex: Windows, Mac Hardware Can Now Operate Google's Operating System

Good news for Chrome OS-powered device fans! Google has introduced the Chrome OS Flex, which allows users to easily switch to the tech giant's operating system even if they're on Windows or Mac.  

Google Introduces Chrome OS Flex

Google introduced Chrome OS Flex, which allows Windows and Mac PCs to run the company's operating system and receive security updates. It also allows for the installation of numerous Android apps, per Digital Trends.

The tech gaint offers Chrome OS, which is known for its ease of use. Chrome OS offers a desktop experience that many have said is to be comparable to that of a Windows system.

It allows users to watch movies, visit Facebook and other social media sites, and do everything else that a browser on competitor operating systems like Windows and macOS can accomplish.

Despite the benefit it provides, Android Authority explained that it still has a significant disadvantage.

Users can't install and run AAA games or utilize desktop tools like Adobe Premiere Plus like anybody can on Windows and macOS devices. Users could only launch apps and games that are accessible in the Play Store or for Linux.

 With the said drawbacks, Google finally released Chrome OS Flex to address this concern.

Google explained that the "Chrome OS Flex is a free and sustainable way to modernize devices you already own." The company also added that it is also easy to deploy across the device, encouraging everyone to simply try it to see what a cloud-first OS has to offer.

Moreover, it is important to note that this is not a dual-boot option because Google's Chrome OS Flex will immediately replace the old Windows or MacOS system on the present system.

For those who are not decided to change their entire system to operate Chrome OS Flex, Google provides an accessible USB drive that users may use to test the operating system first.

Chrome OS Flex takes only a few minutes to download and install on a current Windows or Mac desktop or laptop.

How To Download Chrome OS Flex

In case Windows or MacOS users are planning to switch their operating systems, Google has shared a step-by-step tutorial to download Chrome OS Flex.

To do so, the company reminded everyone to check their device model first if it is certified to have the said OS.

After verification, users must prepare a device to create the USB installer, clarifying that the device on which users use to construct their USB installer may not be the same as the device on which they wish to install Chrome OS Flex.

For the USB drive, it must be 8GB or more.

In terms of the minimum device requirement, Google explained that it should have Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible device, 4GB RAM, 16GB Internal Storage.

Once users contains the mentioned requirements, they must proceed to the following steps.

  1. Users must first download the Chromebook Recovery Utility. Once installed, it must be toggled on.
  2. After toggling on, build the USB installer next.
  3. Once installed, boot the device using the USB installer.
  4. After that, users may now use the Chrome OS Flex.
  5. Lastly, set up and enroll Chrome OS Flex devices.
