Upcoming Amazon Kindle Fire tablets: three new models with higher-resolution displays

Amazon is reportedly working on three new Kindle Fire tablet models to launch in the next few months.

The company's Kindle Fire tablets proved to be a notable success for Amazon and they were the only tablet offerings to significantly chip away at Apple's tablet market share. Now, Amazon apparently has big plasn for the next few months.

When Amazon entered the tablet market with the original Kindle Fire, it did so with an Android-based tablet that was skinned and customized to make the device easier to use for consumers. The tablet also came with a built in ecosystem of Amazon services, including Amazon's own App Store, Kindle Bookstore, and Amazon MP3 music store. The tablet was an instant hit upon release and the company followed up the next year with the Kindle Fire HD. It released both a 7-inch and 8.9-inch tablet that feature HD displays and sport significantly lower prices than Apple's iPad.

BGR now claims to have received details on three upcoming Kindle Fire tablets from a trusted source. The first model will replace the current 7-inch Kindle Fire, which features a 7-inch IPS 1,024 x 600 display. Amazon will reportedly keep the display at 7 inches but increase its resolution to 1,280 x 800, which matches the current Kindle Fire HD's display.

The second tablet will be an updated version of the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD. The site claims that Amazon will use an improved 7-inch display and will raise the resolution. The slate will reportedly see its 1,200 x 800 resolution bumped up to a higher 1,920 x 1,200 display.

Amazon's third tablet will be an update to the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD. This model will also get an upgrade in in terms of screen resolution by moving to a 2,560 x 1,600 display. This will give Amazon bragging rights as having a higher-resolution display than Apple's 2,048 x 1,536 Retina Display.

The source further claims that the design of the tablets will be updated with a more angular form factor and a flat sloped back, describing the new design as "chiseled." The tablet's power and volume buttons will reportedly be placed on the sloping area of the device, reportedly marking a big improvement over the current button layout. The source also claims that the new tablets will be significantly lighter than the current generation and Amazon will launch the new Kindle Fire tablets ahead of the holiday season.
