Sprint releases Samsung Galaxy S4 software update with storage fix and new features

Sprint started rolling out a new Samsung Galaxy S4 update with various features, including the ability to move apps to SD.

The carrier's update for the smartphone finally addresses the storage issue of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and brings several new features as well. The update is available now over-the-air (OTA).

When Samsung released the Galaxy S4 many owners of the 16GB model turned to online forums to complain about the lack of internal storage. Users discovered that the 16GB model only had 8.82 of storage available for the user to install apps, music, videos, and other files on the device. Considering that some apps, particularly games, are quite hefty, only 8.82GB of storage from an advertised 16GB asn't nearly enough.

Samsung took some heat for the issue and announced that it would work on a software update that would increase available storage. The company made good on its promise and released an update for the Galaxy S4, allowing users to store applications on a microSD card. The update has finally made its way to the U.S. and Sprint Galaxy S4 owners can download and install the update now.

Sprint lists the update Galaxy S4 JDQ39.L720VPUAMF9 update with the following fixes and enhancements:

Fixes/Enhancements:

  • Voice - HD Voice enhancements.
  • Audio - Audio clipping when using headphones at higher levels has been addressed.
  • Application Storage - Enables market application installation onto the SD card.
  • Wallpaper modifications - One wallpaper was removed and 2 new wallpapers were added.
  • Messaging Known Issue - "Unfortunately Messaging has Stopped" error has been resolved.

The update also adds the Samsung Knox security suite to the smartphone. Those who haven't been notified that the software update is available on their smartphone can just go into the Settings menu, go to "About phone" and tap "System Updates." This should pull the software from Sprint's servers and allow users to proceed and install the update on their smartphone.

This software update should be particularly helpful for Sprint and T-Mobile users, especially since the carriers only offer the 16GB Galaxy S4. AT&T and Verizon (just recently) offer both the 16GB and 32GB S4. The update is also expected to be released for all Galaxy S4 owners on all U.S. carriers in the near future.
