[RUMOR] The iPhone 14 Could Have an Autofocus Selfie Camera

iPhone front cameras aren't always as good as their rear camera counterparts, but it's getting there. According to GSMArena's pages for the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 13, the former's front camera is 7 MP lower than its rear camera, which is at 12 MP. The latter phone, meanwhile, has its front and rear camera at 12 MP, but their apertures are different, with the front camera's aperture being at f/2.2 while the rear is f/1.6 for its 26mm wide camera and f/2/4 for its ultrawide camera.

However, that imbalance could finally be a thing of the past with the arrival of the iPhone 14.

According to the latest iPhone 14 rumor, the upcoming Apple flagship device will start from a 64GB storage.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently tweeted that the front camera of the upcoming iPhone could have an improved self camera, which comes with autofocus capabilities and a wider aperture, per The Verge.

Kuo also mentioned that the autofocus and lower aperture f-number would be included in three other future iPhone models, making the camera not a selling point for iPhone 14 Pro models.

According to Kuo's tweet, the front camera of four new iPhone models would likely have autofocus and about an f/1.9 aperture. When compared to the iPhone 13's front camera, which only has a fixed focus and an aperture of f/2.2, the addition of autofocus and a lower aperture could make a big difference in selfies of future iPhone 14 owners.

The lower aperture f-number would add a slight background blur and let in more light to the camera, which makes the iPhone 14's front camera slightly better for low-light environment picture taking, such as nighttime selfies or FaceTime portait mode.

Kuo added that the autofocus spport and a lower aperture f-number could provide a better shallow depth-of-field effect for selfie/portrait mode. Additionally, the autofocus could also enhance the focus effect for FaceTime, video call, and live streaming.

The reliable Apple analyst and her colleagues have also predicted that Apple would not be including the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro, with the company choosing a hole-punch design instead, per Android Police. This design means that Apple could be stepping up their game on the front camera end of smartphones so it could be compared to others that already features autofocus and a hole-punch design, such as Samsung's Galaxy S22 smartphone.

Currently, Samsung's Galaxy S22 phones and the Galaxy S22 Ultra have a current crop that consists of a 40MP front-facing camera that has autofocus.

XDA Developers expect that Android phone manufacturers would follow after Apple's move should Kuo's prediction about the iPhone 14's front camera comes true.

The iPhone 14 is expected to be revealed on September later this year, ex expected from Apple's usual schedule.

iPhone 14 Pro To Feature Faster USB 3.0 Lightning Connector

Meanwhile, iDropNews' unanmed sources mentioned that the iPhone 14 Pro models would feature a faster USB 3.0 Lightning connector, per 9to5Mac

This leak means that Apple isn't ready to give up its Lightning port and cables for quite some time despite the company seadily transitioning from it to USB-C ports and cables.
