Tomb Raider's Lifetime Sales Revealed Following Embracer Acquisition — How Much Was It?

Embracer Group announced that it would be purchasing Eidos Montreal, Square Enix Montreal, and Crystal Dynamics, and a catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain and more than 50 back-catalogue games from Square Enix Holdings, from Square Enix on May 2 in a deal worth $300 million.

What Is the Lifetime Sales of Tomb Raider?

According to The FPS Review, The Tomb Raider franchise has sold 88 million copies since Lara Croft was launched in Core's 1996 PlayStation classic, according to a timeline revealed in a presentation (which you can watch below), a success that has subsequently resulted in multiple sequels and the latest reboot trilogy. With 38 million copies sold, Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider have obviously done extremely well.

IGN added that Lara Croft: Relic Run and Lara Croft: Go brought in over 53 million paid mobile downloads for the franchise. On top of that, other Tomb Raider games, such as Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris spinoffs, are included in the timeline, as well as titles released prior to the 2013 reboot, such as Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and Tomb Raider: Underworld.

The Timeline Also Demonstrated the Sales of Deus Ex

The FPS Review additionally reported that the sales performance of the recent Deus Ex games, reboots designed around the dystopian, cyberpunk world first introduced by Ion Storm in 2000, is shown on another slide of the presentation.

The report also mentioned that Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided have sold over 12 million copies. Meanwhile, Deus Ex: The Fall and Deus Ex Go, its mobile-focused spinoffs, have sold over 2 million paid downloads.

More Details About the Embracer Acquisition

In a separate news story of IGN, Embracer noted in a press release that the acquisition involves around 1,100 workers spread over three studios and eight global locations. If the deal goes through, Embracer will have over 14,000 employees, 10,000 game developers, and 124 internal studios. It also disclosed that those studios are working on around 230 games, and more than 30 are AAA titles.

This comes after Crystal Dynamics stated that it was working on a new Tomb Raider game using Unreal Engine 5. The team did not provide any other details.

The report mentioned that Crystal Dynamics, which also worked on Marvel's Avengers, has been assisting Microsoft's The Initiative in the development of the new Perfect Dark game.

On the other hand, Square Enix Montréal is the studio behind titles like Hitman GO, Tomb Raider GO, and Deus Ex GO, and it will continue to focus on AAA IP-based mobile games.

Finally, Eidos Montréal is the studio behind Thief 4, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and other games, and it's working on a number of AAA projects.
