WhatsApp Might Let Users Leave Group Chats ‘Silently’ in a Future Update

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging apps that offer secure end-to-end encryption for all kinds of conversations, including group chats.

However, there will come a time when you'll want to leave a group chat but are too anxious to do so because the group chat's members would know you did through a notification appearing in the group chat's window.

The day when you'll be able to leave group chats without that notification appearing may be arriving soon.

Meta's WhatsApp team is allegedly working on a feature that would allow WhatsApp users to leave group chats without notifying its other members, according to a recent WABetaInfo report.

The feature is currently being developed and will not be beta tested until the WhatsApp team has completed the initial development.

WhatsApp Group Chat Silent Leave Details

According to WABetaInfo's article, "Silently Exit Groups," the feature in question's proper name allows WhatsApp users to leave group chats without the app notifying every member of one that they did, which could number up to 512 people.

However, the Silently Exit Groups feature doesn't offer a perfect escape. A screenshot of the feature showed that should you decide to leave a group chat, a system message will appear stating that WhatsApp will notify the group chat's admins that you have left.

The screenshot of the Silently Exit Groups feature was taken from the WhatsApp Desktop beta, per Mashable India.

WhatsApp normally informs every group chat member when someone leaves a group chat with a notification saying who left. This notification, according to MacRumors' article, could either be a distraction to the group chat's remaining members or a source of embarrassment to the one who left.

WABetaInfo added that the feature would probably be released on WhatsApp beta for Android and iOS in the future, with a clear beta release being unknown at this article's publication.

The same can also be said about the feature appearing on the WhatsApp Desktop beta, with it being planned to be rolled out to users in a future update.

WhatsApp's Recently Released Features

WhatsApp has recently been a busy bee when it comes to adding new features to its instant messaging app. It recently rolled out a feature that lets you react to messages with emojis, like in Facebook's Messenger app, 2GB file sharing, and groups that can accommodate 512 people.

According to the company, these features are part of its efforts to provide secure communication for businesses, organizations, and other close-knit groups.

WhatsApp also introduced a new feature called "Communities" on April 15, which was designed to let institutions like schools and neighborhoods communicate and share media

The Communities feature was designed to allow different organizations ranging from a school to a company whose employees interact using WhatsApp to quickly organize discussions and have their admins message everyone across multiple groups.

CNET mentioned that the Communities feature was WhatsApp's direct answer to Telegram's Groups and Channels.
