Hunter x Hunter (2011)

Because of its attention to detail and emotional engagement, Hunter x Hunter is a rare find among this homogenized pattern. Hunter x Hunter follows Gon Freecss as he embarks on his quest to become a Hunter. He's your usual shonen savior-figure hero, but thankfully he keeps the annoying, repeating mantras to himself.

His passion for others drives the plot, and his determination to see the best in others becomes a marvel of the series. He befriends a young child from an assassin family, and their polarizing dynamic forges a bond that propels the tale forward.

Demon Slayer (2019)

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is popular among anime enthusiasts in the U.S., but it is practically unavoidable in Japan. Years after the manga ended, the film smashed Spirited Away's record for the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time - in the midst of a pandemic.

How's that?! The anime follows Tanjiro Kamado, a brave demon slayer on a journey to save his demon-transformed sister Nezuko.

Kakegurui (2017)

From beginning to end, Kakegurui is a wild work with growing stakes and mental states, all centered around its unstable and unpredictable protagonist. Kakegurui plays with hideous sexuality and twisted power dynamics with amazing animation.

It's the kind of anime that you can't look away from, thanks to its strangely resonant philosophizing and maximalist aesthetic bleed-out. Few other shows, especially ones with such a confined subject matter as gambling, bring you through every emotion known to man so swiftly.

One Piece (1999)

Monkey D. Luffy travels with his globetrotting crew of Straw Hat Pirates on their search for the treasure One Piece and to become the next king of the pirates in this long-running shonen anime. The anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's manga is full of high action and comedy.

Akame ga Kill! (2014)

Akame ga Kill! is a dark anime series with serious topics and some of the best shonen story character development. With its A-level narrative and animation, this anime doesn't waste a single episode. Tatsumi's journey to become an assassin with a cause is calling your name if you like your characters' backstories to be dark and your action to be harsh and bloody.

Special Mention: Your Lie in April (2014)

In the aftermath of his violent mother's death, piano prodigy Kousei Arima rediscovers his love of music and ability to hear his piano. This production targets all of your emotional weak areas by taking you on a poignant musical and dramatic journey. The pastel-drenched color palette and deceptively simple narratives will entice you in and turn you to a music-driven tale believer.
