'The Sandman': Netflix Shares Release Date, Trailer

Netflix will soon be making one of the DC's big-budget series streamable from its platform.

The streaming app recently announced it is releasing the long-awaited adaption of Neil Gaiman's comic book series, "The Sandman," this summer.

To celebrate the announcement and its own Geeked Week event, Netflix released an almost a minute and a half teaser of its adaptation.

'The Sandman' Series and Teaser Trailer Details

Netflix mentioned in its announcement that its adaptation would be mostly faithful to the original comic run, with executive producer Neil Gaiman hinting that the series isn't an exact 1-to-1 adaptation of the comic, according to IGN.

That said, the series' first season seems to follow the events of the original comic's first graphic novel titled "Preludes and Nocturnes."

The series tells the story of Dream, also known as Morpheus, Oneiros, and the Titular Sandman, who wakes from a 105-year captive slumber and sets out to restore the kingdom of the Dreaming, which has gone into disarray in his absence.

The teaser trailer gave glimpses of Dream's summoning and imprisonment at the hands of a group of cultists led by Roderick Burgess.

Burgess is played by Charles Dance, the same actor who played Tywin Lannister in HBO's "Game of Thrones" series.

Once Dream breaks free of his captive slumber, Lucienne, Dream's personal librarian, can be seen informing her master of the destruction the kingdom of the Dreaming has gone through.

Viviene Acheampong, who is more popularly known for her role as "The One's" Grace Kenu, per her IMDb page, lent her acting talent to bring Lucienne to life.

With the kingdom of the Dreaming in disarray, nightmares such as Boyd Holbrook's Corinthian, are free to run wild and create chaos in people's minds. However, Mason Alexander Park's character, Desire, who is one of Dream's siblings, may not take kindly to Dream's escape.

Boyd Holbrook and Mason Alexander Park are known for their roles as "Narcos'" Steve Murphy and the "Cowboy Beebop" TV series' Gren, respectively, per their IMDb pages.

As such, "The Sandman's" first season could involve Dream cleaning up and making Corinthian heel from his dream-murder spree.

The series will also feature a distant ancestor of DC's magical ace and anti-hero, John Constantine, Johanna, who is touched by magic and can perceive how the kingdom of the Dreaming is doing, per The Verge.

Johanna Constantine is played by Jenna Coleman, who also played the titular character of the Victoria TV series, per her IMDb page.

In the comics, John's distant ancestor had a run-in with Dream during the French Revolution, a period centuries apart from the modern-day setting Gaiman used for the series.

However, it isn't sure if Colemen is playing two different members of John's extended family or if Johanna is immortal in this adaptation.

Gwendoline Christie, who played Brienne of Tarth in "Game of Thrones," will be playing Lucifer Morningstar - the same Lucifer featured in the Lucifer TV series played by Tom Ellis. However, Lucifer, at this point of his life, has yet to abdicate his throne in hell in favor of Los Angeles.

The Sandman Season 1 Release Date

Netflix will be releasing its adaptation of "The Sandman" this summer on August 5.
