LG officially announces LG G2 with 5.2-inch edge-to-edge 1080p display and Rear Key concept

LG officially unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the LG G2. The handset has a 5.2-inch edge-to-edge Full HD display, Rear Key buttons, and more.

The company took the wraps off of the LG G2 at an event it held at Lincoln Center in New York City. The LG G2 is the company's latest flagship smartphone and is packed with high-end specs, a gorgeous 5.2-inch Full HD edge-to-edge display and some unique features.

One of the most unique features the LG G2 includes is its button placement. You won't find any buttons on the LG G2's front or sides, as LG has placed all buttons on the rear of the handset. The company refers to this feature as the Rear Key concept and claims it came up with this concept by studying how users held large phones.

The larger a phone became, the more difficult it was to properly access the side keys (power, volume, and camera buttons). LG's research found that moving the main buttons to the back of the phone gave users more control since this was the place was where individual's index fingers were naturally located when holding the device. LG also found that moving the buttons to the rear resulted in fewer dropped phones when adjusting the volume while on a call.

The rear buttons serve as power and volume buttons, but when the volume buttons are long-pressed, one will launch the QuickMemo application for note taking and the other will launch the camera application. Since the power button is on the back, if the LG G2 is lying on a surface face up, there's no need to lift the phone to access the rear power button. LG has included KnockON, a feature that will allow users to double tap the display to power on the smartphone.

Some unique software features LG has  included are:

- Answer Me - Automatically answers the call after lowering the ringtone when the phone is raised to one's ear.

- Plug & Pop - Recommends options or related features to choose from when the earphone or USB cable is detected.

- Text Link - Allows information embedded in text messages to be selected and easily saved in a memo or calendar and searched on a map or the Internet.

- QuickRemote - Not only can LG G2 be used to remotely control popular home entertainment devices, it can also learn from conventional remotes and be customized to operate multiple devices with flexible layouts and keys.

- Slide Aside - Enables easier multitasking by simply "sliding" open apps off to the side using a three-finger swipe.

- Guest Mode - Protects owner's privacy by displaying only pre-selected apps when guests access the phone with a secondary unlock pattern.

The LG G2 features a 5.2-inch 1080 x 1920 Full HD IPS display with a pixel density of 423 pixels per inch (ppi).  It is powered by a 2.26GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. LG has included a 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. The G2 will be offered in 16GB and 32GB of internal storage, will be available in choice of black or white, and packs in a large 3,000 mAh battery.

LG has announced that Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile would offer the LG G2 in the coming weeks.
