Volvo Adds Apple CarPlay to Android Auto Cars

As per a recent report by 9to5 Mac, the newest OTA update on Android Auto-powered vehicles of Volvo finally brings Apple CarPlay.

Several, specifically thousands of Volvo cars, have been leaving out Apple iPhone users after the renowned automaker has decided to go with Android Auto for its newer vehicles.

But this time, the giant car maker is now bringing Apple CarPlay to its newer models that previously only had a built-in infotainment system exclusively for Android users.

Volvo Over-the-Air Updates

Gone are the days when car owners have to go to the dealership to get the latest improvement in their vehicles.

In this day and age, giant automakers like Tesla have started rolling out refinements and bug fixes through over-the-air updates - much like how it works on smartphones these days.

And the renowned carmaker, Volvo, has joined the bandwagon since last year as it has started rolling out fixes and improvements through its constant OTA software updates.

The head of Connected Experience in Volvo, Sanela Ibrovic, says that OTA software updates would ensure that car owners "can enjoy new features quickly and easily."

Essentially, Ibrovic says that "it also means that a new Volvo car is no longer at its finest as it rolls off the factory floor, but keeps improving as we launch additional updates."

People walk past a Volvo S80L parked in Beijing on April 1, 2010. Chinese carmaker Zhejiang Geely Holding hopes to use its takeover of Volvo to crack China's fast-growing luxury car market and vault into global contention using the Swedish brand's cutting-edge technology, analysts say.

However, 9to5 Mac notes that the last time that Volvo pushed for an OTA update for its newer vehicles was in April.

After a few months of hiatus, the latest software update brings a massive change, debuting Apple CarPlay to its Android Auto-powered vehicles.

But there seems to be a notable catch with the arrival of Apple CarPlay to newer Volvo cars.

No Wireless CarPlay on Volvo Vehicles Yet?

According to a recent news story by Car Buyer, the update brings Apple CarPlay capabilities.

But it requires its users to plug their iPhone into the infotainment system of Volvo via its USB slot.

Volvo car owners with a built-in Android Auto system could start enjoying Apple CarPlay once they receive the update from the carmaker.

It is interesting to note that the sibling electric vehicle (EV) maker of Volvo, Polestar, also started rolling out Apple CarPlay support to its all-electric cars last June, also through a software update.
