Snap Reveals First AR Game to the World — Here’s What You Need To Know

If you're looking for a mobile ghost hunting game similar to Phasmophobia, then you'd be surprised where you'd find one.

Snap recently revealed Ghost Phone, the company's first augmented reality game that can be played directly from its Snapchat app.

The game is now available on Snapchat and can be found on Snapchat under the app's Lens Explorer tab. You can also access the link by visiting the game's official Snapchat page.

Ghost Phone Features And Details

Snap's Ghost Phone is a "thrilling AR game" where Snapchat users can discover the secrets of an abandoned phone and solve the mystery of the fate of Lisa, the phone's previous owner.

Learning Lisa's ultimate fate is a task that will eventually bring you face to face with entities of otherworldly and supernatural origins, per the company's announcement.

The game was allegedly built using Snap's Lens Studio and Playcanvas, its web-first game engine, allowing the game to use surface recognition and world-scan technology to weave AR ghosts into the environment of those who play the game.

Thanks to this feature, the game will require players to get up and move around to collect phantom energy. While you do so, you'll be prompted to use your smartphone's camera to look around in search of ghosts that appear in your immediate surroundings for you to capture, per The Verge.

Capturing ghosts will soon be your main priority while playing the game, as the more you find and capture, the more clues to Lisa's fate and other helpful apps you will unlock.

The game's trailer shows that the game puts a green-ish filter on your camera feed while you play the game to make your surroundings look like you're viewing them through night-vision goggles.

Additionally, the ghosts you can capture vary from floating orbs to the spirits of long-deceased people, which can startle you with a jump scare or two.

Is It Worth Playing?

The Verge mentioned that although the game might not reach the heights Niantic's Pokemon Go did, it proved to be better than expected than most AR games currently on the market.

If you're up for a quick AR game to pass the time and you're not afraid of trying a tech demo AR game, then Ghost Phone could help you kill your boredom for some time.

Ghost Phone Availability

Ghost Phone is already available to play on Snapchat, specifically via Snap's Minis feature, which is a collection of smaller apps within Snapchat that offers a range of different functions, per Mashable.

To find it, open the app and tap the Rocket icon in Chat or find the game in Lens Explorer.

Here are some instructions for you to follow to find it easier:

  1. With Snapchat opened, tap the middle camera icon to open the recording screen.
  2. Tap the smiley face icon on the right side of the Record button to open the Lens menu.
  3. Tap the "explore" icon located in the lower right corner of the screen.
  4. Enter "Ghost Phone" in the search bar and tap on the game's icon, which is a picture of a smartphone with a question mark on it.

Opening the game will lead to a prompt with a password for you to decode. Successfully decoding it will let you "power on" the "Ghost Phone" to play the game.
