When there is too much noise, it can be really annoying. It might be challenging to get a good night's sleep and focus at work if your air conditioner is too noisy. Negative effects such as decreased productivity at work and loss of focus might result from sleep deprivation.

While it is true that noisy air conditioners can be inconvenient, those sounds are actually indicators of larger issues that need to be fixed.

We have compiled anything you need to know about the most common air conditioner sounds and how to fix them (via CNET and Luce Aircon).

Try the tips below if your air conditioner is making unusual noises. Call an air conditioner specialist if nothing else works.

Banging Noise

Your air conditioner may have broken or loose parts if you hear banging noises coming from it. To locate the issue, you must open the air conditioner. To remove the debris, either manually open the air conditioner or use a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle attachment.

Buzzing Noise

Your air conditioner may have a problem with the external condenser, the fan motor, or the filters if you hear a persistent or consistent buzzing emanating from it. Check your outside condenser unit for any dirt that may be lodged within at the first sign of a buzzing sound. Use a hose and a long brush to clean the outdoor unit, or compressed air to blast the debris away.

Clanking Noise

Clanking sounds could be an indication of loose components that require attention. However, the fan blades may also be at blame for this noise. Fan blades could occasionally fall out of balance or loose, which could damage the machine's other internal parts. On the other hand, this noise might be caused by a dirty filter, which is easily removed with a vacuum. You may need to check for broken parts if the AC noise continues even after you've cleaned the filter.

Humming Noise

The problem is most likely dirty coils if your air conditioner is humming. If a malfunctioning compressor is involved along with the humming, however, the problem can actually be with the electrical parts.

You can use a can of compressed air to remove the dirt from your air conditioner's evaporator or compressor coils. Another option is to gently clean the dust off with a toothbrush.

Squealing Noise

Squealing noises are pretty serious because they could indicate dangerous internal pressure problems with your air conditioner. In other cases, it could not indicate a significant problem, but it is still strongly advised that you take immediate action by calling an expert if you hear it.

Whirring Noise

A whirring sound suggests that there is dirt inside your unit. However, a loud noise that sounds more like helicopter blades is a sign that the fan motor or blades are broken. To avoid any more damage to your unit, shut off the air conditioner right away.
