Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell Remake To Feature an ‘Updated’ Story for a ‘Modern-Day Audience’

Splinter Cell fans are in for something new.

Ubisoft is reportedly looking for a new scriptwriter for its upcoming Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, which will feature an "updated" story that is said to fit "modern-day audiences."

The Splinter Cell series first started with the release of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell on Nov. 17, 2002, per the Splinter Cell Wiki

Splinter Cell Remake New Story Details

A recent Ubisoft Toronto job post spotted by Game Ranx showed that the popular video game developer is looking for a scriptwriter that will "rewrite and update" the story of Splinter Cell for a modern-day audience.

According to the job posting, Ubisoft will use the remake as a foundation for the updated storyline. It also wants to "keep the spirit and themes of the original [2002] game" while exploring the game's characters and the world they live in to make them "more authentic and believable."

The job posting also revealed that the scriptwriter the company is looking for would write dialogue for in-game missions and cinematic scenes, which includes "barks and NPC conversation."

Ubisoft may have a good reason for changing the game's storyline. according to PlayStation Lifestyle, the original 2002 game focuses on a fictional conflict between Georgia and Azerbaijan, a clash that has many similarities with the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

As such, Ubisoft may be changing the game's storyline to avoid a possible uncomfortable political commentary.

This change in the popular game series' storyline is also consistent with Ubisoft's decision on remaking Splinter Cell instead of remastering it.

Ubisoft Producer Matt West mentioned in a statement he previously said in December 2021 that the gaming public now has an "even more refined palate." As such, remaking the original 2022 game is better than remastering it as it gives Ubisoft the chance to "go a litle bit further with it."

"Although we're still in the very earliest stages of development, what we're trying to do is make sure the spirit of the early games remains intact, in all of the ways that gave early Splinter Cell its identity," West said.

He also added that Splinter Cell fans should look forward to updated visuals and design elements that match their comfort and expectation. West also mentioned that Ubisoft would keep the game linear instead of turning it into an open-world game.

What Is The Splinter Cell Series?

Ubisoft's Splinter Cell series, according to Clutch Points, is one of the more well-known stealth game franchises in the gaming industry. It is the rival of Konami's Metal Gear Solid franchise, with the first Metal Gear Solid game being released on Sept. 3, 1998, per the Metal Gear Wiki

While the Metal Gear Solid games focus on tactical espionage action, which forces players to complete an objective through stealth than action, the Splinter Cell series gives players a balanced mix of stealth and action without using too many sci-fi gadgets.
