7 Movies That Celebrate Women in STEM

Women have always been taking up space in the field of science and technology, but their efforts and contributions are often disregarded or overlooked.

Today, women are becoming more and more prominent in this male-dominated arena, inspiring young girls to venture in STEM against all odds.

With this, here are seven movies that may inspire young women and girls with stories that celebrate the brilliant minds of women in STEM:

'Madame Curie' (1943)

"Madame Curie" is a movie about Marie Curie's achievements, and how she became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the only woman who have won the award twice.

This film shows how Curie managed to discover significant information in her radioactive research, while having little to no resources at the time, LinkedIn writes.

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, "Madame Curie" portrays the relentless work Curie put into her work, which led her to be one of the most recognizable figures in science today.

'Hidden Figures' (2016)

Tom's Guide says that "Hidden Figures" is a movie about an underrepresented sector in the field of STEM, as it is based on the true story of Black women who were mathematicians at NASA.

It is a film about Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan, who all played a huge role in the creation of the space program.

This film, which can be streamed on Disney Plus, highlights the women who calculated flight paths, supervised programming, and engineered at NASA before there were any elaborate computers.

'Picture A Scientist' (2020)

Highlighting the gender and racial bias that result in explicit harassment rooting in institutional discrimination in STEM, "Picture A Scientist" is definitely a film to watch, Variety notes.

"Picture a Scientist" presents the stories of female scientists as they navigate the culture of science institutions that remain unsafe and unjust towards women and people of color.

This documentary, which streams on Netflix, shows how women are changing the landscape of these work spaces while addressing the obstacles women face in STEM institutions.
