HBO Max's 'The Last of Us' Series is Arriving in January

HBO Max dropped a release date for the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of "The Last of Us," the award-winning 2013 video game, according to Hypebeast.

According to the show's page on HBO Max, the series will likely premiere on the platform on January 15, 2023, more than two months from now.

The Naughty Dog Central tweeted a screenshot of the show's HBO Max page highlighting the announcement that the series will be released on January 15.

Likewise, there are Twitter users who claimed they saw the date of the show's debut just under "The Last of Us" teaser trailer. 

However, despite the appearance of the show's release date on the official HBO Max page, there is no formal announcement yet regarding the series' debut. This means that we still have to wait for an official statement from the streamer.

"The Last of Us" is based on the post-apocalyptic adventure game of the Naughty Dog having the same name. It will feature Pedro Pascal ("The Mandalorian," "Game of Thrones") as Joel and Bella Ramsey ("Game of Thrones," "Hilda") as Ellie. 

The series will also star Gabriel Luna ("Terminator: Dark Fate") as Joel's brother Tommy, and Anna Torv ("Mindhunter") as Joel's smuggling partner Tess.

Nick Offerman will play the role of Bill, while Merle Dandridge will star as Fireflies leader Marlene.

Appearing as guest stars are Storm Reid and Murray Bartlett. They will play the roles of Riley and Frank, respectively.

Based on the trailer of the series, which was released in September, it appears that the live-action adaptation is "incredibly faithful to the video game," according to Polygon.

Craig Mazin, the writer of HBO's "Chernobyl," created the series. Meanwhile, Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog developed and executive-produced the show.

The first season of "The Last of Us" will run for 10 episodes.

'The Last of Us' Trailer Depicts Some Scenes From the Game

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, "The Last of Us" story happened in the year 2033. It was 20 years later after a fungus outbreak happened. 

Joel, the main character of the series, together with the other characters, must escape the "Clickers" or the fungus zombies.

The trailer released in September is roughly two minutes, but there are some shots that would be instantly recognized by the fans of the game. 

Two of the shots in the trailer are depictions of the horrific outbreak day in the game. Joel is seen running with his daughter Sarah in his arms as chaos follows them. Sarah looks absolutely terrified. 

There are other scenes in the trailer that are similar to the video game, including Joel and Ellie escaping a quarantine zone. Another scene is the iconic two collapsing skyscrapers that Joel and Elie must traverse.

We can also see Ellie riding a merry-go-round together with her childhood friend Riley.

A snapshot of the people infected by thw fungus was also shown. The fungus has turned them into monsters. The trailer show that they have mushroom-like spores sprouting from their faces - just like in the games.
