MediaTek Claims Its Upcoming Dimensity 9200 Chip Is Wi-Fi 7 Ready

Wi-Fi 7-ready smartphones will soon be available on store shelves.

MediaTek recently announced its newest high-end silicon, the Dimensity 9200, a chipset that provides faster multicore speed, better GPU performance, and less power consumption.

The company also claims that its newest System-on-Chip (SoC) is Wi-Fi 7-ready.

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 Chipset Specifications

MediaTek mentioned in its statement that its upcoming SoC, the Dimensity 9200 chipset, is equipped with an ARM Cortex-X3, ARM Cortex-A715, an ARM Immortalis-G715 GPU, and a MediaTek APU 690 AI processor.

It also comes with a First LPDDR5X 8533 Mbps, First UFS 4.0 with MCQ, and MediaTek's 2nd Generation TSMC 4nm chipset.

Utilizing these pieces of hardware, the Dimensity 9200 chipset is expected to provide "incredible performance and intelligent power efficiency" to flagship smartphones, along with higher quality photos and videos, better gaming performance, and fast internet connections.

How could it not? Its MediaTek APU 690 AI processor gives up to 35% faster processing speeds and up to 45% lower power consumption when compared to fifth-generation APU. It also has a more efficient shared memory engine between its DLA, VPU, and DMA processors.

Speaking of the Dimensity 9200's DLA processor, it comes with a Mixed-Precision mode that performs faster (up to 98%) compared to an FP16.

TSMC's second-generation network architecture search also helps with the chipset's power consumption, with it enhancing power efficiency by up to 15%.

As such, the Dimensity 9200 has a 10% faster multicore speed score on Geekbench 5.0, 32% better GPU performance, and 25% longer battery life due to less power consumption when compared to the Dimensity 9000, per CNET.

Meanwhile, its usage of ARM's Immortalis-G715 GPU provides 32% better performance and uses l41% less power than the Dimensity 9000's GPU.

Despite these advancements in performance, processing speed, and power efficiency, however, the Dimensity 9200's greatest strength is its capability to connect to Wi-Fi 7-capable routers and provide impressive download and upload speeds.

There are a few Wi-Fi 7-ready chipsets in the market, with Qualcomm's Networking Pro Series Wi-Fi 7 being one of them. As such, MediaTek's chipset has a distinct advantage over most of its competitors as far as connectivity is concerned.

According to Engadget, the first phones that has MediaTek's Dimensity 9200 chipset equipped is expected to arrive by the end of 2022, which is good for both choice and competition as the rest of the market scrambles to attain Wi-Fi 7 capabilities.

What Is Wi-Fi 7?

Wi-Fi 7, or IEEE 802.11be, is the 7th generation of Wi-Fi, according to Wired. It has a 320 MHz ultra-wide bandwidth, 4096-QAM, Multi-RU, and Multi-Link Operation, which promises speeds four times faster than what the current Wi-Fi 6E can provide and 13 times faster than Wi-Fi 5, per TP-Link.

Thanks to this speed, it also reduces latency and provides a more stable and efficient internet connection.

It can also support more devices connected to it without having its latency negatively affected, making it great at delivering high-quality video, better cloud gaming, and better performance on AR and VR games.

Wi-Fi 7 is also backward-compatible just like its predecessors. As such, even if you have a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 5 router, you can still experience Wi-Fi 7 speeds on your phone or PC, per Smart Prix.

However, there are not many devices that are capable of supporting Wi-Fi 7 in the market as of press time. With the Dimensity 9200 and Qualcomm's chipset, Wi-Fi 7-capable devices will soon be widely available worldwide.
