WhatsApp Begins Rolling Out ‘Message Yourself’ Feature to Users

WhatsApp has started rolling out a feature called "Message Yourself" to users. Taking hints from its name, it allows you to chat with yourself. It lets you send notes, reminders, and shopping lists to your WhatsApp.

Sending messages to your own account is a convenient way to keep some pieces of information easily accessible. Using WhatsApp, your personal messages to yourself will be just right next to your other conversations.

'Message Yourself' to Reach Android, iPhone Users in the Coming Weeks

According to TechCrunch, WhatsApp announced on Monday the rollout of the new messaging feature. The news outlet says that Message Yourself will reach Android and iPhone users in the coming weeks.

The company confirmed to the news outlet that the Message Yourself feature has begun rolling out globally.

In October, WABetaInfo reported that the Meta-owned instant messaging app initially tested the feature with some beta testers.

When you create a new chat, you will see your contact at the top of the contacts list on WhatsApp. Tapping that contact will bring you to the chat screen that you can use to send messages to yourselves.

The Message Yourself feature is new on WhatsApp. However, in the past, there are users who have been using a workaround to message themselves.

To message yourself, you could use the app's "click to chat" feature. But with the new feature, you no longer need to do the additional steps to self-chat.

In addition, you also have the option to pin your self-chat messages to the top of the conversation list. You can do this if you don't want to search for yourself in the chat list.

How to Message Yourself on WhatsApp

Doing self-chat on WhatsApp works similarly to starting any other chat on the app, according to Make Use Of. Follow these steps to start sending messages to yourself:

  • Simply open WhatsApp on your main Chats tab.
  • On the bottom right of the screen, you will see the new chat icon. Click that.
  • You will find your name at the top of the list of contacts. Under it, you'll find the text "Message yourself."To open a new chat, just select your profile.
  • Just like a regular chat, a chat window will open. In this space, you can type messages to yourself.

Your messages to yourself are end-to-end encrypted like any other chat on WhatsApp. Like any other chat, you can send yourself any message. Your profile will also pop up in the list of contacts when you want to forward yourself a message, share a picture, or share a link.

Other platforms have a similar feature. For instance, rival Signal has a feature called "Note to Self" that lets you create messages for personal use.

But Signal's feature doesn't suggest your own profile at the top of the recipient list. Instead, to use the feature, you need to search and select the contact entry "Note to Self."

Aside from WhatsApp and Signal, the community platform Slack also has a space named "Jot Something Down." It allows you to send notes to yourself.

A similar feature called Saved Messages is also offered by Telegram. It lets you bookmark any important messages. You could also save your notes and reminders so you can access them in the future. Once saved, messages can be accessed from the top of the chat screen.
