Dungeons & Dragons Developer Wizards Of The Coast Cancels Five Video Game Titles

Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast, the company that produces Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, has shelved at least five undisclosed video games.

As Baldur's Gate 3 nears completion, the move would seem to indicate that Wizards of the Coast is rethinking its broader approach to digital gaming, Game Spot writes.

The Impact Of The Cancellations To The Company Remains Unknown

Less than 15 employees at Wizards of the Coast will lose their employment as a result of the decision, according to a company representative.

Additionally, once it occurs, individuals will have the opportunity to apply for various positions at the company.

Uncertainty exists as to the extent to which the reductions will affect the studios working on the games, including Otherside Entertainment (Underworld Ascendant) and Hidden Path Entertainment (Defense Grid).

The company, a Hasbro subsidiary, is best known for being the creator of the very popular Dungeons & Dragons tabletop games.

It is important to note that the hugely successful fifth edition of the tabletop game, One D&D was just released by Wizards of the Coast.

The Company Is Hoping That The Impact Is Small Scale

The internal studios Wizards of the Coast has been establishing, some of them with outstanding talent will not be significantly impacted by the cancellations given the tiny scope of the layoffs.

Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, a spiritual successor to a Baldur's Gate spin-off series that received mainly unfavorable reviews, was released by Wizards of the Coast back in 2021.

Baldur's Gate 3, the follow-up to two D&D-inspired masterpieces from the late 1990s and early 2000s, has been warmly received in early access and is scheduled to reach its full release edition in August of this year.

In addition to this, Larian, a highly respected RPG studio, will release Baldur's Gate 3 in the latter half of 2023, Game Spot writes.

In the past two years, Wizards of the Coast has also announced the founding of two studios in Austin, Texas, Skeleton Key and Archetype Entertainment, both of which are run by former BioWare employees.

Wizards of the Coast has not released many new games or made many announcements despite its considerable investment in video games.

The only other game on the company's public slate is Baldur's Gate 3 from Larian Studios, the studio behind the Divinity games. Dark Alliance, which received a mixed response.

According to Polygon, in addition to that, Magic: The Gathering Online and Magic: The Gathering Arena, are the only other games available to the general public.

Despite the issues it is facing, according to a recently issued business statement, Wizards of the Coast is still dedicated to adopting digital games.

The business also claims that it made certain adjustments to its long-term portfolio in order to concentrate on games that strategically support the growth of its current brands.

This includes those that have the potential to reach new audiences or engage existing ones in fresh ways, Video Games Chronicle reports.
