Motorola's Moto X shipped with mid-range specs and a high-end price, which has now been drastically reduced to $99.99.

The Moto X was considered to be one of the most anticipated smartphones to be released in 2013. Soon after Google acquired Motorola, rumors of the smartphone the companies worked on together began to surface. The leaks continued to pour in on the handset's rumored innovative features, specs, and its unique ability that would allow customers to design the device. The smartphone also had some unbelievable specs that claimed to overshadow Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S4.

The hype was just that, hype. When Motorola announced the Moto X it dashed the hopes of allowing customers to design the handset, since the only way of doing so was through a service offered by Motorola called Moto Maker. The service was exclusive to AT&T and was said to roll out to other carriers in the future. If you weren't an AT&T customer you would have to settle for a white or black Moto X.

Motorola also shipped the Moto X with mid-range specs and placed it at the same price point as its rivals who all offered more powerful handsets with top of the line specs. The Moto X could be purchased for $199.99 when signing a new 2-year contract, but when compared to flagship smartphones such as the Galaxy S4, HTC One, and Apple's iPhone 5s, it was clear Motorola needed to cut the price.

The company and some of its carriers offering the Moto X have slashed the price significantly. When purchasing the Moto X through Moto Maker, which allows consumers to customize the AT&T smartphone, Google's Motorola is selling the handset for $99.99. Sprint and U.S. Cellular have also followed Motorola and have cut the price of the Moto X to the same $99.99 price tag when signing a new 2-year contract.
