Writers Guild of America Proposes Using AI as a Tool To Write Scripts

The concerns about AI taking over the jobs of humans are not entirely unfounded, and with the launch of GPT-4, it may just be one step closer to reality. In fact, the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) proposed that AI should be allowed to write scripts.

AI Writers for Hollywood Films

WGA says that a human writer can use AI-powered tools or ChatGPT to write scripts and they would be credited solely for the outcome. The writers will not have to share the credit with the AI tools used and will keep all their earnings for themselves.

In a different scenario, an AI can also be used to generate an entire script so a human writer can review, edit, and re-write the content, and they will still be credited as the first writer of the AI-generated and edited script.

Despite this proposal, the Writer's Guild of America expressed that AI-generated text should not be considered literary or source material, as mentioned in Gizmodo, which goes for novels, plays, and magazine articles that a screenplay could be adapted from.

This could brew issues when it comes to who really deserves the credit or if a writer really does deserve the title of first writer, especially if most of the script is technically written by AI. The WGA suggested that AI is more of a tool than a creator.

This also allows writers to avoid the debate about who owns the script, whether it's the software company that launched the AI, or the writer who smoothed out the outcome that was generated by the AI through prompts.

Still, it raises the more evident predicament that several jobs in various industries are worried about. AI may soon replace jobs on a wider scale, especially with OpenAI predicting that 80% of jobs in the US may be affected by AI eventually.

What GPT-4 is Capable Of

One of the most obvious changes in GPT-4 compared to GPT-3 is that it's now capable of working with photos that users upload. This means that people will have more to do with the new AI chatbot, and more capabilities mean more human jobs being threatened.

To showcase just how advanced the new model is, a user uploaded a photo of the content of their refrigerator, and the AI was able to come up with a meal that can be prepared based on the available ingredients.

OpenAi also demonstrated how GPT-4 was able to create a functional website in just a few minutes using a drawing. This could threaten the jobs of many web developers who can do the job at a human pace.

According to CNN, people with little to no experience with coding were able to recreate vintage games like Bong, Tetris, and Snake. GPT-4 provided these individuals with instructions on how to do it, and others managed to create original games as well.

This could make a huge impact on the gaming industry. An analyst at Gartner Research, Arun Chandrasekaran, said that GPT-4 will soon be used for storyboarding, character creation, as well as gaming content creation.
