6 Technology Myths and Misconceptions That People Still Believe

The technology that we have now has become so complex and advanced that it's basically impossible to know everything about it. We do have basic knowledge, otherwise, we won't be able to use them, but how much of that knowledge is actually not true? Here are a couple you might still believe.

1. Overnight Charging Will Break Your Battery

For those who are constantly on their phones, there's barely enough time to charge them. At the end of the day, your phone battery is so close to zero percent so you try and charge it as you sleep so you can wake up to a fully charged phone.

There are still those who believe that doing this will harm or destroy your battery. Don't worry, it won't. Smartphones now use Lithium Ion batteries and they stop charging as soon as it's full. You won't have to set an alarm for the middle of the night to unplug your device.

2. Incognito Mode Gives You Full Privacy

What you browse through when you're in incognito mode is no one's business but your own, but if you think that the browser mode gives you total privacy, you shouldn't. Your internet service provider can still see what you search for, as well as the websites you visit (wink wink), so you might want to reconsider testing the limits of incognito mode privacy.

3. Your Phone Could Give You Cancer

I've been told before that I shouldn't place my phone close to me when I catch some shut-eye since it can cause cancer. For a while, I believed it too, but it's actually a myth. According to Versatech, studies show that phones don't pose a risk of getting cancer. Electromagnetic radiation, which phones exude, can only cause a little heat, nothing more.

4. Using Rice to Dry a Soaked Phone

It's unclear how that "hack" came to be, but some claim that putting a soaked phone in rice will dry it out because the rice will absorb the moisture. However, that might actually do more harm than good. Unwashed rice has starch, and that might damage your phone even more. Use desiccants instead, which are silica gel packets you usually find in packs of jerky.

5. You're Probably Never Going to be Hacked

Of all the people in the world, why would a hacker target an average joe like you, right? Well, it doesn't matter who you are or what you do for a living. A hacker can always steal something from you that can cause huge problems, as pointed out by PCMag.

Your devices hold a great deal of private information. If you pay using your debit or credit card as you shop online, hackers can get a hold of that and drain your account. Even your identity and other personal information can be sold to other threat actors, so don't be too confident.

6. Phone Usage + Gas Stations = Fires and Explosions

Of all the times you've been in a gas station, you've probably seen signages that indicate how phone usage is not allowed. That's true, but the part about how using your phone can start a fire or cause an explosion, that's false.

You're not allowed to use your phone so you can focus on the task at hand, which is filling your tank. There have been no records of instances where a phone caused a fire in a gas station because it was in use. You still shouldn't use it, but not because it's a fire risk.
