Samsung ships 5 million Galaxy Note 3 phablets in first month on sale

Samsung has announced that it has shipped 5 million Galaxy Note 3 phablets during the device's first month of availability.

The company has 5 million reasons to be happy with its latest Galaxy Note phablet. JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications revealed to Hanooki.com during a press briefing that his company has shipped over 5 million Galaxy Note 3 smartphones during the first month of the phablet being on sale.

What's even more impressive about this revelation is that it shows the phablet category Samsung can be credited with creating is growing very rapidly. When the company announced the original 5.3-inch Galaxy Note in 2011, many critics panned the device for being too large. They believed consumers would not want to carry around a smartphone that was bordering on the size of a small tablet. The critics were wrong and Samsung went on to sell 5 million Galaxy Notes in the first 5 months of being on sale.

Samsung pushed the envelope even further when it introduced the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 in 2012. The company's even larger phablet was an even bigger success, as it hit 5 million units shipped within 2 months of being on sale. Consumers have taken to the idea of converging a smartphone with a small tablet and now Samsung is facing new competition with companies such as HTC, Nokia, and Sony all getting in on the phablet game.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 features a 5.7-inch 1080p Full HD Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 386 pixels per inch (ppi) and runs Android 4.3 with Samsung's TouchWiz UI on top. It is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit (GPU) and 3GB of RAM.

Its camera capabilities include a 13-megapixel illuminated rear camera with "smart stabilization" and a 2-megapixel front facing shooter, with both cameras able to record 1080p HD video. It has 32GB of internal storage, as well as a microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards. Its wireless connectivity options consist of a 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC, and an IR blaster to turn the Note 3 into a universal remote control and also features a dedicated program guide. Samsung has packed a large 3,200 mAh removable battery and enhanced S Pen functionality.

Samsung's 5 million Galaxy Note 3 phablets shipped in a month is a truly impressive achievement and should prove once and for all that phablets really are in great demand.
