HBO Max and Discovery Plus to Merge as ‘Max’ with Various Subscription Tiers

Warner Bros. Discovery is combining both HBO Max and Discovery Plus, which will be officially revealed tomorrow. The streaming service is said to have different tiers, which will include a cheaper tier with ads.

Warner Bros. Discovery's 'Max'

Soon, Netflix and Disney Plus will find that Max might just find themselves with a worthy competitor. HBO Max and Discovery Plus' consolidation will bring a new streaming service that will combine its hit TV shows.

Warner Bros. Discovery will be holding a press event on Wednesday to reveal the service that they will offer. According to The Verge, the service will cost up to $16 a month, although that's the ad-tier plan, and cheaper options might be available.

The media giant might release the streaming service as early as next month 2023. It's still unclear what the plans are for Discovery Plus, whether it will be shut down or remain as a standalone service, which costs $4.99 a month.

The company certainly has big plans, which follow the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Plus, HBO Max is currently working on many projects that has many viewers hooked, so consolidation of HBO Max and Discovery Plus might just work out for the best.

It could also be a crucial move since the company has had to lay off thousands of employees and set many projects aside. This could be part of the company's effort to reduce costs and earn revenue to pay its debt of $50 billion.

Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said in an investor conference that one of their big priorities this year was the "Max" streaming service. Despite the drop in subscribers in various streaming services, the company remains optimistic.

Shows We Can Expect

Discovery Plus has a lot of shows to bring to the table as well. It has hit shows such as "Dr. Pimple Popper," "Fixer Upper," "Mythbusters," "Deadliest Catch," "Property Brothers," "House of Hammer," and more. 

HBO, on the other hand, has seen one TV show succeed after another. It had just finished with one of its most recent projects, which is the video game adaptation with the same title "The Last of Us." It has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.9 score on IMDb.

It has also started filming for the second season of its "Game of Thrones" prequel, "House of the Dragon." The first season has also been a massive success, earning a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.5 score pm IMDb.

Although the last episode of "Game of Thrones" premiered in April 2019, it is still watched and sought after by fans. The love for the show has been reignited after the release of its prequel focusing on the Targaryen dynasty.

With its latest news, HBO Max has also taken on a reboot for "Harry Potter." The TV show has the book series author J.K. Rowling as its executive producer, and according to Polygon, the show is set to run for a decade.
