Here are the Top 5 Best Sci-Fi Movies on Netflix as of April 2023

Watching sci-fi movies can have the elements of action, drama, thriller, horror and comedy rolled into one. There is something that easily draws a casual viewer into this genre, and perhaps it's because of the attempt of the producer to offer a scientific background to whatever absurd storyline that they have for the movie.

Sci-fi movies want us to believe that they can somehow happen in real life, even if the possibility of that happening is virtually zero. At the end of the day, they are enjoyable and bring the best out of every movie night. If you have Netflix at home, you are in for a treat because there are tons of good sci-fi movies you can choose from.

Here are the top 5 best sci-fi movies on Netflix as of this moment.

'The Adam Project' (2022)

This Netflix original sci-fi movie by Shawn Levy features Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Catherine Keener, Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldana and the movie's breakout star, Walker Scobell. "The Adam Project" is about a young boy (Scobell) who gets to meet an astronaut (Reynolds) who crash-landed on Earth. In an interesting sci-fi twist, that astronaut is none other than the young boy's future self!

"The Adam Project," being a Ryan Reynolds-starrer, is something you would expect to be filled with humor. The good news is that this Netflix sci-fi movie has a lot of heartful moments as well, coming from the usually comedic Reynolds, as per Collider. The bulk of the funny scenes in the movie came from the actor who portrays Reynold's younger self, Scobell.

'Rim of the World' (2019)

This sci-movie from action director McG, the same artistic mind who gave life to "Termination Salvation," is not your typical alien invasion thriller flick. Starring Jack Gore, Miya Cech and Benjamin Flores Jr., "Rim of the World" is also a coming-of-age film that tells the story of how four teenage misfits stepped up to defend the world from the terrifying creatures. Holding the only key that will defeat the invaders, the youngsters will do whatever it takes to save the world.

"Rim of the World" is an enjoyable sci-fi flick for kids and kids-at-heart who are into awesome creature designs. The movie also has a fair share of inspiring and heartfelt scenes.

'Okja' (2017)

From the Academy Award-winning director, Bong Joon-ho, "Okja" is a cinematic masterpiece that will give a different sci-fi movie experience to viewers. Starring Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, An Seo Hyun, Byun Heebong, Steven Yeun and Lily Collins, "Okja" tells the story of a young girl and her pet Okja, who happens to be a genetically modified "super pig." She will do what it takes to protect Okja from those people who want to bring them harm.

Netflix subscribers are lucky to have "Okja" in the movie lineup because it is something that will pleasantly surprise you after watching. You will be satisfied by the creative risks that the director was willing to take to give you a very memorable sci-fi movie. According to Paste Magazine, "Okja" is "nuanced and complex" but not too "restrained."

'Galaxy Quest' (1999)

Dean Parisot's "Galaxy Quest" is another sci-movie that you shouldn't miss while it is still on Netflix. Starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub and Sam Rockwell, this movie actually knows that it's a "Star Trek" parody and takes its sweet time making fun of sci-fi and space movies in general.

However, "Galaxy Quest" is able to do this masterfully. The movie is about a cast of a popular sci-fi TV series that encounter real-life aliens who believe that the Earth-based TV show accurately depicts the life of intergalactic creatures.

'Don't Look Up' (2021)

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchette, Timothee Chalamet and Tyler Perry, "Don't Look Up" is much more than its powerhouse cast as it delivers a very timely message to viewers. Director Adam McKay used dark humor to put the message across in an entertaining way.

"Don't Look Up" is about the story of two scientists scrambling to get the world's attention as a planet-killing comet is days away from ending life on Earth. Unfortunately, the people who they think could help seem to be uninterested in saving the world.
