5 Video Game to Movie Adaptations You Can’t Miss

The success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is nothing short of astounding. According to a Games Radar article citing a Variety report, the movie's box office earning has recently reached over $500 million, making it the biggest video game film of all time.

However, Illumination, the movie's producer, and Nintendo aren't the only ones who can see success at the box office with video game adaptations specifically made for the big screen.

Here are some of the most anticipated video game-to-movie adaptations you should look out for in the foreseeable future:

'Ghost of Tsushima'

Jin Sakai's stories as the titular "Ghost of Tsushima" doesn't end with the video game that brought him and his quest to push back the Mongol invasion force back to life.

Gamespot previously reported that John Wick director Chad Stahelski would be taking the responsibility of bringing Sakai to life in his adaptation of the hit Sucker Punch video game. He mentioned that he is working on "pushing the color palette" to bring the game to life in a realistic and grounded way.

While a movie based on Jin Sakai's quest is confirmed for 2021, per Game Rant, it still doesn't have a definite release date.

'Sifu'

One of the greatest martial arts video games to be released in 2022, Sifu tells the story of a kung-fu master on a mission of revenge on which he could either find Wude or die. However, in a twist of fate, the kung-fu master can return to life a bit older than he was if he does experience death - a tough concept to depict on the big screen.

Derek Kolstad signed on to be the one to adapt the game to theaters and cinemas, but a concrete release date has yet to be announced, per IGN.

'Return to Silent Hill'

Now is a good time to be a Silent Hill series fan. You may recall that Konami is developing a Silent Hill 2 remake due sometime next year, according to The Nerd Stash

However, a remake of the best Silent Hill game is not the only thing the Silent Hill community is getting. A Deadline article mentioned that Christophe Gans is directing a movie adapting the same game starring Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson as James and Mary Shepherd Sunderland, respectively, assuming it faithfully follows the game's cast.

The movie, titled "Return to Silent Hill," doesn't have a definite release date yet.

'Bioshock'

The Bioshock series, particularly its first game, is one of the most popular games in the video game industry. However, the same cannot be said with the many failed attempts to adapt the video game series into theaters.

Thankfully, Netflix is producing a movie that could finally put the series' first game on the big screen, per Inverse. Francis Lawrence and Michael Green of "I Am Legend" and "Logan" fame will direct and write the movie, respectively.

However, with Netflix's failed release of the "Resident Evil" series, the movie's future at the box office remains uncertain as of press time.

'Borderlands'

One of the most popular first-person shooters in the video game industry is also getting a movie adaptation in the future.

According to Pocket Lint, the Borderlands series is getting its very own movie adaptation, with it seemingly featuring an original plot. It has Lilith, played by Kate Blanchett, put together a team of mercenaries and misfits who fans will instantly recognize to find the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe.

The official "Borderlands" movie page states that Eli Roth will direct it, while Craig Mazin, along with Roth, will handle its screenplay.

The movie originally had a 2023 release date, but a test screening's results prompted a set of reshoots that might have pushed back its launch on the big screen.
