Americans Are Worried

A Reuters/Ipsos poll was published showing two-thirds of its 4,415 respondents were wary about the potentially harmful effects of the emergence of AI. As for those who believe that AI can be a threat to civilization, 61% think that there is a potential risk.

Since the advancement of AI, organizations and companies alike are integrating AI into their business, which justifies the concern coming from people seeing as it now has a wide range of sectors that can be compromised such as government, medicine, education, and more.

More and more companies are joining in on the AI race, and tech giants are pushing it further than we could have imagined. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have been working hard to develop AI to serve us in a way that hasn't before.

Despite that, even executives and experts in the field believe that there is a potential disaster in the development of AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman himself believes that the technology will need to be regulated to avoid possible incidents of misuse, as mentioned in Ars Technica.

Named the godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton also has doubts concerning the advancement of AI. His research has been instrumental to the progress that AI has achieved today, yet he believes that there are dangers to the technology, which may even be bigger than climate change.

Lawmakers are also expressing their concerns with the matter, with Senator Cory Booker saying that there is "no way to put this genie in the bottle." Everyone wants to join in on the hype, especially since the business world is flocking around it.

On one hand, there have been innovations that civilizations have been afraid of because they do not understand, yet they turned out to be beneficial. On the other, some discoveries that people believed would help has done more harm than good.

There is no way to know for sure, and the best developers and anyone involved in AI work can do, is process with caution. Ai has been moving at full speed and it would take a very big obstacle to stop it.

Troubles to be Wary Of

We can't exactly say that the concerns are unfounded. After all, we are already seeing signs of AI being exploited based on certain incidents. We have already seen what generative AI is capable of, and that's only a glimpse compared to powerful versions that can be developed.

We first saw the possible way to exploit AI when students started using ChatGPT to create their homework for them. Although tools to detect such instances have been created, it may not be enough, and then there's the trouble of AI replacing human jobs.

White-collar jobs could soon be replaced by technology that can be programmed to process data, all without worrying about factors like human error. AI-generated images or sounds can be used to spread misinformation, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
